Re: Living trusts
How about starting with a will now (leaving some of your assets to your partner) and making the more complicated structure when you have more time? At least you'll have something in place instead of the current nothing. This is a good idea - especially since you can just write a will down on a piec...

I came over from lightfruit55's journal and want to throw my opinion in the ring. I 100% don't think it's wrong to have models. Actually, the creepy robot thing about AxelHyest wrote: Another idea that I think is probably uncommon and not worth worrying about is the idea that the model-builders and ...

Back after the 4th of July and I keep hearing from everyone, Oh I hate America. Maybe it's because I just read Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, but America right now seems pretty great to me. Sure, some of the predictions in those books literally did come true (Did T...

One option is to let it stop bothering you. When you make a mistake and it is haunting you, just stop thinking about it. Say to yourself "I don't like this thought. I will now have another one". To do this, you need to have some other thoughts prepared. They can be anything, but you must p...

Thanks @Jacob, @OOTB and @ego for the thoughtful exchanges. I’ve read them over the past few days but did not want to reply until I had the time to actually sit down and thoroughly process the same. I’ve nothing to worthwhile to add to the relative preference vs skills debate or the imagination vs ...

My parents always got adult cats from the shelter rather than kittens because you never know how a kitten is going to turn out, but you can see how an adult cat has already turned out. We picked our childhood cat by volunteering at the animal shelter. My mom took me when I was 3 and my sister was 6 ...

I only read the last few pages but I'm not getting why you are so angry. Can you explain what is making you angry about getting a degree then not getting an engineering job? Are most people in Switzerland who get engineering degrees not getting jobs and you're mad at the system for funneling you thr...

An update is I got the audiobook from that library that was recommended, and the advice it gives is that the book explains what a trust is and all the homework you can do and have prepared for the lawyer to reduce lawyer hours. But after you do all the homework and collect all the information you ca...

Jesus Christ, I am having so much trouble focusing at work. I did nothing the past few days. I have been doing this for months. Nobody seems to notice. Everyone seems to be focused only on what they themselves are doing or not doing, even my manager. Just don't get in anyone's way. I don't particula...

I think you're asking just the right questions. Convenience is the default when I'm at my place with the boys, and when I'm with my girlfriend the key will be how to enjoy getting together differently. For me, getting comfortable with some simple instant pot recipes will be a good first step. And w...

Looking to read more about happiness. Looked at a book on Finnish (or Norwegian) lifestyle at the library, going to get it when the library reopens. If anyone could help with the name of such book that would help. US news seemed (I've gone low news consumption since 2016) to push the idea that peop...

@7w5 @B&G Guys, I feel like this is the point at which you’re supposed to lie to me. “It gets so much better, you’re right around the corner from better sleep!” Where’s my toxic positivity y’know? /s but also 😭 @macg Appreciate the advice. For what it’s worth I’m probably exaggerating a bit on ...

Maybe with banning attachments in PM, to avoid server load.
BTW, I tend to steer conversation to more synchronous communicator, but not always the other party is interested.
Any good privacy app chat? Telegram and Signal are jokes.

Re: Living trusts
I read a book called "Living Trusts for Everyone" by Ronald Sharp. It was about 150 pages. It gave a good overview of trusts and their uses along with advice on when to use a lawyer and how to minimize lawyer usage (in setting up the trust and post-death of the grantor). If you want a boo...

This is bewildering to me... or maybe I just like games too much. You're in the perfect position to meet minimum spend on multiple cards (not easy for ERE folks), and you want to redeem for travel, which is usually offers the most beneficial redemption rates. Plus with two of you, you can take adva...

+1 to this recommendation. Based on what you've shared here and in your journal, it doesn't sound like this is something you need to accomplish immediately. You have a lot of other stuff going on at the moment, so it might be worthwhile researching a bit more (though I realize that is essentially w...

Re: Living trusts
A will still goes through probate. A trust does not. There are court fees, attorney fees and executor fees. It can take months of years for assets to be disbursed to heirs. A living trust avoids that.

@axelheyst - Yes, Aldi or Costco is usually best. But dang, ppl in the 90’s could go get a burger + fries at a middle of the road restaurant and it was $10, a similar price to the Aldi route now. I suppose it’d be different if salaries went up too, but they don’t seem to have. I remember MMM mentio...

Re: Living trusts
The only convincing reason I've heard for a living trust is if you have an adult dependent child who is both mentally incapable of managing their own financial affairs, and also would lose access to means-tested support programs if the money was in their name. You don't seem to have children. Proba...

Definitely use a lawyer with experience in trusts. And why is this women who you've just met so keen to involve herself in your financial affairs ? I'm hearing alarm bells... The previous owner was her good friend, and did not have a will, and that is why the house went to probate. She ended up bei...
