Re: NYT article on fatFIRE
However, I told the fact-checker that the whole "father"-reference thing is pretty rare and that it kinda diminishes the generations that came before. They ignored it and wrote it in anyway. I get the impression you don't follow much financial content from "FInfluencers" - https...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
@2B1S Fortunately I'm not stressing market activity at all. I realized about halfway through the FI journey that I got pretty excited about the gains, but didn't really stress the drops. This is pretty fortunate, and I think it is likely a result of preparing myself early psychologically for a lot o...

Re: Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta
You are certainly not alone. I think hyper-focusing on COL and money is a significant hurdle for many here, myself included. The irony for me is that the more money I accumulated, the more I realized it doesn't really matter that much in terms of securing my freedom. I also think it is easy to overc...

Re: Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta
how do we balance these trade-offs? Selfishly, I'm trying to think across systems in my life to create a more coherent, homeotelic web of actions, motivated by my values, that enables me to pursue my web of goals. I see the benefit of a dishwasher as directly increasing my time for creativity. I se...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
Our visa expired and our time in Vietnam has come to an end. I'm glad we were able to spend a full twelve weeks there. It was DW's first time and my first return in roughly fifteen years. We would both gladly go back. A few photos from the trip: Street Life in Dalat: https://i.imgur.com/qZM0do4.jpeg...

Re: NYT article on fatFIRE
If you google the title of the article you should be able to get beyond the paywall. Classic NYT trick.

I enjoyed the article, and thought it presented a fairly balanced view on FIRE. The photo of Wong in the Ironman suit is a beautiful manifestation of the ridiculous nature of Fatfire.

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8
Hypothesis: WL8 - Changing the system from within. WL9 - Changing the system from without by connecting with other systems. I spent some time rereading the discussions on ERE 1 vs. ERE 2 this morning. https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?p=265772#p265772 I've previously thought th...

You can check out Portfolio Charts for a good introduction on different portfolios, asset allocation, and the underlying philosophy. It was developed by an ERE forum member: https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolios/ I think understanding your own psychology, fears, and appetite for risk is one of the ...

Re: The camino
Knowing the habits and preferences of a hiking partner can also be quite helpful. Some people like to stretch for a while in the morning, some like a big breakfast or a hot beverage before starting out, some prefer to get started and have a light breakfast after walking for an hour. Some people aren...

Re: The camino
I'd echo what @Jean said to do a few, multi-day treks with your gear before leaving. This might be as simple as walking different routes and distances in your hometown to see how your body feels walking for extended periods with a pack. This is my standard advice to anyone planning on a long-distanc...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
Thanks @ego! We certainly spend a lot of time together, and it is easy to take that for granted at times. One of our common practices at meals is to verbalize gratitude. It keeps the conversation moving in a positive manner. Getting regular, daily exposure to how millions of people in developing cou...

May Update: Financial: NW took a hit last month. Down almost 22k. It was the first month we didn't have any income coming in from our old jobs, so a minor mental shift there. Nonetheless, we are doing well and things are going better than I would have hoped for financially 4-6 months ago. Work cont...

I think you can call that a well-deserved deload. I suspect you'll probably have things sorted once you are back in Poland. Maybe in the meantime you'll have to settle for some burpees and dips off of fine, Italian leather sofas.

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale
Hm, I wonder about that last sentence. I'm not sure if it's quite right to think of being able to approach WL9/10 through a side door (to my mind that sort of implies a shortcut? maybe not how you meant it), rather than simply arriving there from a different path. Any path to WL9/10 is going to inv...

We had a more narrow discussion about some of the questions and points you raised in regards to the environmental impacts of investments and a runaway stash last fall in the JAFI threa...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
Slow travel is also a choice. I get the impression you guys relocate by one plane-distance at a time. Instead consider a bike or a bus-distance. If the new place doesn't work, you simply move back to where you came from. Meandering around the world. Basically emulating a bike trip around the world....

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
This is fascinating stuff @7w5, and probably not too far off the mark. In order to relax from being the logistician, you need to first learn how to express your preferences/feelings. Rule of thumb is that it is easier to experience pleasure if you are not the logistician/decision-maker in the moment...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
Lots of good stuff here to chew on. I'll break my responses in a couple posts. Are you actually slow traveling @WRC? Do you and DW have moments of boredom? This would be a good indicator that you are traveling slow enough. ;) Slow travel is probably a bit relative, but I think we are probably going ...
