Re: docx's Journal

Hey docx, first, great that you share your progress here. I guess it feels better to write about it. I think that all members have kind words for you. Living authentically is important in my opinion. So if that means to change something in your life it is worth it. I am also from Germany and right n...

Re: frosti85 ERE journal.

First ERE mission: get rid of the car. I live in a suburb of Vienna, right now my route to work is: 10 minutes car ride to train station 15 minute train 10 minute subway The car costs ~ 80€ per month with gas costs included. Very good idea in my opinion. I've done the same in the last year and it s...

Hi Frosti. I guess some weeks ago another Austrian from Vienna started a Journal. Also nice to have you here. Looking forward to hear from your steps towards ERE. I live in Germany and have a similar story and background. Have you already thought about cutting expenses even more? What I have learned...

So you are going to continue working? FI but not RE? That is also very great. This is also my goal.
Does your passive income cover your regular expenses then?

Re: Living in Germany and trying to achieve FIRE in the year 2024

I've been travelling a lot (around 25 countries) throughout my life and lived abroad for a while- but since I'm hooked on FI, I cut back, although I find that sometimes not too easy because it sems to me that travelling is the holy grale of social capital in my age cohort ;) What is a great comprom...

Thanks for the info, may I ask a few questions out of curiousity? :) 180€/ month for housing? wow- cheap city/ shared apartment- how do you do it? 108€ for a car- i guess depreciation is not included, right? or how come it's so low :) (just read you got rid of the car-so it shouldn't matter anymore...

Re: Austria, again

We are clearly heading down the wrong road. Thinking back I really regret not having looked for a job in Switzerland right out of university. People around me refuse to see that. That's probably one reason I am here - to figure out if I am just turning into a paranoid nut case or if my thoughts are...

That is a great status update. Your progress is fastern than you thought it would be. Why is that so? You save more than expected? I'm curious about the details which you mentioned. I guess the tax initatives from Trump could help you, don't they. Unluckily, here in Good Ol Germany, taxes are quite ...

Hi Mdfire2024, Servus from Vienna! Congrats on your high savings rate! May I ask what your expenses (mine: around 8400€/year) are and how you define reaching your goal? I'm 27 and my current networth is around 13 years worth of annual expenses. edit: numbers corrected Servus Poor Daniel! Nice nickn...

Welcome Parsimony. I live in Germany and I know what you mean. Germany and Austria are in some things the same, e.g. government, retirement, ... In what kind of business/market do you work? I am 34 and also like to FIRE :-) Currently I have a SR between 70% and 90%. Maybe if you share your expenses ...

@Generation-X
Thank you for the information. It is eye-opening. Haven't read about that yet. I guess I have to adapt my plans to that. I used to calculate with an inflation rate of about 2%. I think if it is true for the US, it is also applicable for Germany.

Therefore my main reason to become FI is not work related. I hope I will always have meaningful work to d...

@vezkor: Thank you for the great explanation. I also had the idea to compare it with an investment in the stock market. You showed it quite good. I am a owner. What I do consider also is the potential increase of home prices, maybe around 5% p.a. And another point is important for me. In Germany the...

Re: 1% rule for housing applicable UK / Worldwide?

Another example from south germany where the housing prices have increased strongly over the last couple of years.

in a very small city (around 15 thousand pop.)
monthly rent: 678
price: 184000 (january 2017)
= 0,37%

is this good or bad right now?
- as a house owner?
- as a renter?

I am also interested in answers and experiences. For me it's still easy. At work I have my collegues and on the weekends I regularly visit my family.
