Re: How much do you give to charity?
Most of these responses make me kind of sad, if only because they reflect where we were in accumulation phase. We were selfish, mostly due to a habit of financial fear. It was a hard habit to break even when we became more secure. It's also interesting that most of the more generous cite religious m...

Re: the animal's journal
@Halfmoon- Thank you! Always appreciate your comments. I'm not sure I understand your 2nd to last sentence. I think it's about exploring other places and then deciding based off a greater understanding? Most of the time I really am content here. I'd say it's somewhere in the range of 30% of days th...

I commented on your intro, but I'll say it again: welcome! Regarding your anxiety over exchange rates: is there any way to open a bank account in the US and invest in US dollar CDs? There's a credit union in Pennsylvania that's offering 3.25% on a 3-year CD, which might fit nicely with your plan to ...

Re: Hello from London!
Welcome, ember! Congratulations on finding love and getting yourself in a position to retire in 2 years. I grew up in Pennsylvania, and it still has a lot of rural land and forests. The rural areas are employment-challenged, so you can get some remarkable deals on real estate.

Re: Halfmoon's journal
@halfmoon No hunters here but understand from experiences with my own diminutive DH that how furious the guy confronting is makes a lot of impact. He once gave chase in a car when he spotted a fly-tipping driver (much bigger) in action in our drive. Made him stop his van, return to our property and...

Re: the animal's journal
Animal, your journal is always so interesting. After reading the more recent posts, I had SO many thoughts. Alas, 99% of them are useless due to our difference in age, gender, life choices and geography. I'm left with a few paltry contributions: 1. Gender never seemed important to me pre-Facebook, a...

On the other side, having the stream of money from the job can make that much faster. I may try to push for telecommuting after I finish the project I'm in, so that I have the option to move there sooner and possibly keeping the job for longer, at least as long as necessary to do all the restoratio...

Re: Halfmoon's journal
I just wrote replies to everyone's comments, and they vaporized. Is it my computer (possible), my lameness (utterly probable), or has this site gotten more difficult? Anyway...I love what everyone wrote, both familiar voices and new ones. Thank you, and now onward to the past. ;) THE ROAD NOT TAKEN ...

Re: akratic's ERE journal
Selfishly, I'm posting on akratic's journal to try bumping it. This was one of the first journals to which I became addicted. Understood that people move on, but I can hope.

Re: Halfmoon's journal
I want to insert a revelation quickly here, because I feel the pressure to not keep posting periodically and bumping my journal. :? Today was a rainy one, which deprived me of outdoor accomplishment and forced me to face my Fear of Cleaning. Things are insanely dust-infested chez nous, so I decided ...

Re: Halfmoon's journal
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions for not losing a post when I hit Edit. I did try going back, but it was gone for good. This time I’m writing in Word and will copy over when done. Be warned: below lies a bunch of whining, then excessive bragging about what a bad-ass I am. CATCHING UP ON THE PR...

Re: Halfmoon's journal
Thank you everyone for the kind words after my shocking neglect. I just spent close to an hour writing an update of our life over the past 1.5 years, and it somehow vaporized...just all disappeared, and I was asked to log in again. I think I'll have to try again tomorrow.

Re: Halfmoon's journal
7Wannabe5, everything you said. You have such a holistic view of the world, both on an interpersonal level and a larger ecosystem one. I really think you should be teaching or writing, and I don't mean at the tiny tot level. This isn't to diminish the importance of shaping young minds, but some of t...

DutchGirl, I've never been to the Netherlands and didn't imagine that they had cattle guards. Photos always make your country look so civilized and orderly. I guess I just assumed that the cattle would stay in their assigned spots without intervention. :P When we bought our in-cared for house in the...
