Re: 2Birds1Stone's hustle to freedom!

Very impressive, you are in a tremendous place for your age and making great progress. Nice detail in your journal. I think two big keys for you are low rents and low groceries. How do you keep rents at $550/mo? And where do you live in the U.S. to have $550/mo in rents (including utilities)? My gue...

Re: Journal of MDFIRE2024

MDFIRE2024, thanks for your journal. Did you post a list of your income and expenses? Not sure if I missed it. I find it interesting when people post a detailed list of their income/expenses in their journals so others can learn how they are living so cheap and saving so much and get ideas and motiv...

Re: Noedig's Journal

Also, just read through your whole journal and you have a delightful writing style. I have an image of you in my head as an jolly but dignified Briton who says phrases like "old chap" and remains wryly stoic against all obstacles. (80% of that may just be my idea of what British people are like, wh...

Re: How to quit coffee?

Starbucks is the biggest drug dealer in the world (espresso=liquid cocaine). Thus their mega success. But yes I do partake sometimes. It's amazing to me the rise of popularity of coffee. When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's there were not a lot of coffee shops in the U.S. My mom made Maxwell house ...

Re: My Plan for Semi-Retirement

I have had both great and bad experiences with being an out of state landlord. Have had multiple rentals in multiple states. Some were former residences I turned into rentals (those were/are the GREAT rentals). Never hired property management, have always self-managed. My great experiences are in a ...

Funniest ERE journal BY FAR that I have read! You seriously missed a million dollar career in stand up. There are some serious gems in this journal. LMFAO reading this! Laughed so hard I choked on my home made 55 cent a pound millet and Kale (stolen form the neighbors garden) lunch. I needed that. W...

Re: How to quit coffee?

I personally do not believe the hype that coffee is healthy. I do not think it is from my own personal experience of being a heavy coffee drinker at one point. Watch closely who funds the health studies on coffee, it can be tricky to see who is behind the studies and influences them (a multi-billion...

@Allagash - I don't know if this is primarily idiosyncratic/autobiographic, but other than the rare open-minded unicorn, the groups who've been the easiest to communicate ERE to are: 1) Traders ... because they're used to the idea of making money via other means than salary or contract work. 2) Per...

Permaculturiat, dumpster divers, squatters, etc... They all have much in common with erers. Permaculture possibly yes. Dumpster divers and squatters probably not as much  I'm more "ERE lite". I got to ERE more by cranking up the income & investing faucets for a few years vs. plugging every dra...

Sounds like you might need to find an ERE dating pool. There was a forum here for dating long ago but nobody was using it. I figured here would be the obvious place to hook up with like-minded individuals but I don't think we have the density. I don't know if anything is going on behind the scenes....

Re: Tackling the big 3 --> Housing, Transportation, Food

Housing: I have a paid off apartement. I only have to pay utilities. Therefore my spending for housing is relatively low. It takes about 7% from my income. Because it works so good, I am a quite big fan of owning rather than renting. Depending on where you live owning does not make sense vs. rentin...

Re: Tackling the big 3 --> Housing, Transportation, Food

I do pretty well on food, but auto and housing are big expenses for me. Housing grade D. I live in a very average nothing special 600 sf 1 bedroom apt in a cheaper area of a expensive city and pay $1,250/mo (will probably go up to at least $1,325/mo as they raise rents annually here A LOT). Nicer 1 ...

Re: How many of you are financially independent? What have you done since FI? What did you do before FI?

I switched to real estate in 2002. I finally learned to make a lot of money, save it, and invest it well during my great run from 2008-2015 that got me to FI. Were you a real estate agent? Or did you buy and hold properties? Bought rentals when they were really cheap post 2008 crash in CA and was i...

If you don't mind me asking, what type of business were you in in the high tech sector? My cousin and I have started a software business as contractors..so far things are going very well and there seems to be more work than we can handle. Might need to hire on other people in the future. Just looki...

Re: How many of you are financially independent? What have you done since FI? What did you do before FI?

I'm FI and stopped paid work or running a business at 45 years old. I had a few careers/biz before FI in high tech and real estate. I blew all my money in my 20's and a lot of my 30's being dumb and having fun. So when I hit late 30's I knew I had to make a lot of money fast to make up for lost time...

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

I think I've read a 25" class c can fit on a lot of the mechanic bays and lifts. Similar engines to Ford F-350's/Chevy 3500 pickups I would think? Anza Borrego desert state park area east of SD is nice in winter. Been there tent camping when used to live in SD. Pretty spot. I believe many FT RV-ers ...

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

Thanks Jacob and C40 for the info. Full time RV-ing is one of those things that I think is just really hard to tell before you do it what will work for you...what vehicle and size will be the adequate, and how you will travel (move around a lot? stay longer periods? areas with lower park fees). I do...

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

My thinking on towing a small economy car behind a Class C is it would give me a lot of mobility wherever I go. I don't think a scooter or E bike would work. I would want to go on day hikes, explore the area, go shopping, go to events. I would only have to drive the RV when I moved it to a new spot....

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

What attracts you to an RV over a van like the Sprinter? Sprinter may be an option. Vans are pretty small for full time living IMO. I want enough space to be able to do work on my laptop from the RV and feel comfortable. Class B vans can be crazy high priced too. I looked at the Roadtrek and felt s...

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

Yes Airstreams hold value pretty well. So do the smaller fiberglass trailers (Casita, Scamp, Burro). But the downside with these types that hold value well is they can be very pricey even used. Motorhomes (Class C and Class A) do depreciate a lot, even if bought used I imagine they will still see de...

Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

I'm a single guy I pay a lot of rent in the Seattle metro area, and rent keeps rising rapidly with no end in sight. I pay about $1,250/mo for a very average 1 bedroom apt in a very average area (that includes water/sewer/garbage). This will likely rise to at least $1,325/mo when my lease is up in 7 ...
