like her brain is only 60% human. And 40% Miley Cyrus, congrats to C40 who once dated a reptilian celeb. normal and even cool in some circles. This is the same with conspiracy theories and reminds me of that thread that was on here about how intelligence doesn't = rational thinking and maybe the in...

Re: Shaq says the Earth is flat.

@ Jennypenny - You just blew my mind. Interesting how deep the conspiracy rabbit-hole is, but I guess that makes sense considering the most deep you get the weirder connections you can make. I've only heard the no-holocaust, no-moon landing, no-9/11 stuff, maybe these ones are too weird to hit the m...

Re: Shaq says the Earth is flat.

@ Dragline - Totally agree, this just means random people believe the Earth is flat. I guess when my friend told me this at work the idea anyone thought that was true kind of blew my mind. Then I spoke with my brother who told me a guy at his work believes cell phone towers are all designed to funct...

Re: Shaq says the Earth is flat.

Maybe I am making the same mistake? I am generalizing about a population based on 2 points of data. Is this our natural tendency?

Shaq says the Earth is flat.

Has it come to a point where we can’t rationalize beyond our senses. Is imagination and/or abstract thinking dying because of marketing? How do you explain this?

Here is something sweet and skill-inducing, although I feel some here may bawk at the fact we will be paying for this, but hey, you do you, I'll do me. I am organizing a friends bachelor party and have decided on a relatively cheap skill-based drunken excursion into the woods with real zombies! http...

Re: Hunter-Gatherer Economics?

@ George the OG (Original Gangsta) - Any insight into whether or not those people choose to live that way versus feeling forced to live that way? Is their any difference in opinion on the lifestyle between the two mindsets? @ Riggerjack - A business is on the docket for pursuing during my 8-month pa...

Hunter-Gatherer Economics?

I've been reading "Sapiens" by Yuval Harari and although it romanticizes the pre-agricultural hunter-gatherer lifestyle a little too much for my taste, it did spark an existing thought that searching out and capitalizing on shorter commitment income opportunities might be a more engaging work-life t...

Re: Independent of your job

Yes and Yes. Most conflict based situations or difficult times at work bring up this thought and emotion. It makes wading through shit easier, because I know, well, worst case is they fire me (which is unlikely) or I have to quit for reasons of shame or guilt or something like that. If this happened...

Re: SustainableHappiness Journal

I found ERE after finding MMM, I enjoyed it and then after a month or so of reading and discussing a couple articles with siblings/wife that the approach was a too extreme. That was a couple years ago and I stopped reading through every post, but for some reason it held on in the back of my mind. Da...

Writing about the situation below is, for some reason, what has finally spurred me to start a journal on here. Re: Anyone have experience with psilocybin mushroom microdosing?

Between the ages of 18-25 I was using mushrooms 1-3 times per year in larger than microdoses. They provided perspective in my life that was not apparent prior and I believe they have changed my life for the positive. I agree you feel mentally clear for weeks after a good trip on them (I have no expe...

Re: Motivation to retire early

just because a focus on material/physical things doesn't guarantee sustainable happiness doesn't mean that mental things will. some basic mental development is probably necessary to be happy, just as some physical things are (water, shelter, food). brute believes that it's pretty much the exact sam...

Re: Motivation to retire early

Yeah. You have to believe in an afterlife to think that will work. do mental and spiritual development go with SustainableHappiness? if not, how are they helpful? The list mentioned does not imply belief in an afterlife (although an afterlife of some sort is a facet of Buddhism). I hold no such bel...

That idea of FI as a floor for sustainable happiness and the rest is up to you is great. I will keep that brute. Imagine what outrunning the "friend & family" hamster wheel?? What would that look like? I can imagine the click-bait. "Man/Woman has happy family and relationships of 6 kids, 100 regular...

Re: Motivation to retire early

So, after giving thought and reading on death and/or the meaning of life (two completely different topics, but very related), I have found mindfulness practice the most useful method for coming to grips with it. Keep in mind I am a beginner ERE-er and mindfulness practitioner, but I hope this helps....

Since this thread is flowing a little, I'll take the time to ask a question based on your responses. Re: Finding sustainable happiness

Welcome. I'm more of a shallow sunshine, beer and sexual gratification type of guy when it comes to happiness. But living with ease sounds good too. Those sound like an excellent afternoon! But consuming them in life-sized quantities may be unsustainable for health and balance reasons? Hence my qua...
