Re: Thought Experiment/Question

Food, rent, transportation wouldn't change much, but I'd feel better about our rent. Invest more in skills training (from professionals) that I think might bring me and my family joy and function that I am currently either teaching myself "good enough" right now, or avoiding entirely due to time con...

Re: How can you be (semi) retired while still having a mortgage?

I'd argue your stance (pay off mtg before 40 and then rent out first house) has a serious Your Mileage May Vary component, just be careful if you extrapolating that advice to everyone. - Landlording can seriously suck from a lifestyle perspective if it's not your thing (I definitely have a personal ...

Re: Advice Regarding a Sales Job?

I've typically worked in more sales SME and sales analytics roles with heavy customer interaction as an advisor, less straight negotiations and business development. I enjoy the customer interaction, but am not interested at all in the products and have started to get bored in each of my roles rough...

Re: Tattoos, Piercings?

Tattoos should only be gotten while extremely wasted. Trust me, I did it and ended up with a Canadian maple leaf on my back (tequila didn't make me any more imaginative). I now don't see how getting a tattoo or piercing while really, really drunk could go badly. Minus the blood, you always gotta min...

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

The other side of this is how effective you believe this to be. The effectiveness is quantifiable -> 2% increase in revenue, 7% increase in operating profits...High EBITDA growth and revenue growth consistently. Regardless of whether or not it is moral, it is very effective, because most marketers ...

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

The store where I buy food displays the unit price ($ per oz, lb, whatever) so I'm impervious to this. The tricky thing is remembering the cost of something you don't buy on a regular basis 4 months after you purchased it last, although the ERE lifestyle seems more inclined to a regular consistent ...

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

Nah -- it's not evil. It's just marketing. Yes, I am in Marketing/Sales and am frustrated by the fact that even though I know the meaning attached to the situation stems from my own biases and like most here have pointed out, your moral compass is your own and evil is what you make of it. However I...

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

Hmm... Maybe evil was the wrong word and it was the wrong question (and overdramatic). I think my question is, if you worked in an industry where this was a regular practice (definitely not illegal, in fact highly rewarded and commended when executed well) would you be o.k. with it, OR would it make...

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

I should also clarify, this is revenue management in CPG. In hotels and airlines it's a completely different beast (and more operations driven pricing modeling than a marketing ploy, i.e. 50 rooms open 1 day from now = drop the price)

Revenue Management...Evil?

In my role I get to sit in strategy sessions determining key moves to either grow revenue or reduce costs in the next 1, 2, 5 years. Occasionally we get consultants in to give us good ideas and generally share knowledge. One aspect of this is called revenue management which is according to the Wiki ...

That's a bad ass trip. I also probably would've skipped the LSD as long as the beer was cold. Also, I noted you are an Albertan. One of my friends wears a rubber or silicone wedding band. Seems to work and cost almost nothing. A company called Qalo sells these for $20 a pop, or in bulk for less. The Role of “Free Luxury”

If you are in a situation where you are given free rein to spend on living expenses like food, shelter, etc. where do you draw the line on what you spend? Re: Boring-ness as a Weakness

I debated on whether or not to use the word weakness here, because what it should have been was "frowned upon". But the references to running away from typical suburban BBQ talk resonate and I answer my original question. As long as you avoid boredom, I see "boring-ness" as a who cares. Especially w...

Boring-ness as a Weakness

This question may be geared more specifically to Jacob, as it formed while reading the ERE book. But essentially, what is the nature of boring-ness as a personal characteristic? ERE paints it in a very poor light and while I don't disagree entirely, I would like to understand what the boring people ...
