Re: Cheap, semi-reliable internet access

AT&T is offering an interesting device called a Mobley. The device is $100 and then it's a month to month $20 + fees (~ $24?) for "unlimited" data. Or you can get the device for free with a two year commitment. The Mobley is a small box that plugs into a vehicles ODB II port (typically used for read...

Re: Intelligently Financing a Child

I think it all comes down to choices and planning. I went to a private school. I want to send my kids to that same private school. My wife was becoming a public school teacher when we met. Now she is certified to teach in that private school system. Faculty get free tuition for their dependents. Tha...

Re: Makeshift washing machine?

You could look into Drumi or a Wonderwash . I'm skeptical but it's fun reading the Amazon reviews on the Wonderwash. You could also google how people wash clothes on cruising (long trip) sailboats. I went to google that and the first link actually mentioned the Wonderwash however I think some have a...

Re: Need a new (to me) laptop -- best laptop/tablet?

Yes, you should be able to use any Bluetooth keyboard with it. Have you considered a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (older model)? I have a Surface Pro 1 or 2 that I like although I no longer need it and am going to put it up on eBay. It looks like the Pro 3 is in your price range. I was impressed with the...

I like the DIY idea. I've got three of these: Winix WAC5500 True HEPA Air Cleaner with PlasmaWave Technology They go on sale every once in a while (I paid $130, right now they are $170, CamelCamelCamel is good for looking at pricing history on Amazon ). The filter is washable and I've done that once...

Re: Talk me out of acquiring a new bike

Have you thought about going for something a little more classic? There are a lot of touring bikes out there. The older Cannondale ST400+ can be really nice. If you find one with low usage, the original equipment can be in great shape. It will have mounts for your rear/front racks, room for mud guar...

Pondering how to graph potential SWR for mix of pre and post tax investment accounts?

I'm probably over thinking this but let's say, for example, I have these investment accounts: * $10,000 in Simple IRA (pre-tax) * $50,000 in 401k (pre-tax) * $30,000 in Roth IRA (principle post-tax) * $100,000 post tax investments Total: $190,000 Would you simply graph that (using 4% as SWR for the ...

Re: SavingWithBabies path to ER

We tried the cloth diapers and this time it was a success! We only ordered 6 for the first try but then ordered another 12. We're going to use both cloth and disposable as the situation warrants (ie travel disposable, sleeping probably disposable because how absorbant they are). I sold enough stock ...

Re: Commute Time

Have you tried the train line when you would be commuting on it? 30 minutes might be an uncomfortable amount of time to stand. I've only had 18-20 minute train rides and typically those have been standing. It strains my back a little to stand in one spot that long. Your experience will vary but some...

Re: Best way to mop?

Steam mop. The cloth head comes off and goes in the clothes washer. All you need is distilled or low-mineral water and electricity. It really takes off the grime and your floors feel wonderfully smooth and clean. We also don't wear shoes inside and that definitely helps.

Re: Best practices during low points? Share your lowest lows? :(

I went through a dark spot a while ago. Looking back, mild to medium depression spread over months if not years. I woke up late one day, turned on the TV and 9/11 was happening. That was somehow a catalyst for me to change my life. I moved a state away to live with my brother and went back to colleg...

Re: Reduced my cell phone bill by $60 a month

My Obihai 110 boxes are still working on Google Voice for $0 a year. The catch was they were supposed to stop working a few years ago when Google said they wouldn't support third party phone adapters. But they still work. That is great they still work. I had one and stopped using it after a move an...

any other recent opinions about cheap phone service? brute doesn't really call/text much, mostly data. a little bit of calling and texting here and there, but less than 5 minutes/5 texts per month for sure if data is present. in the past, brute has tried TracFone (works well enough, but can't BYOD?...

We tried cloth diapers in the beginning. I still have the washer hose hooked up to the toilet actually. For some reason, the baby got a really bad rash from them that didn't seem to go away until we switched to disposable. I can't remember off hand if my wife tried again but now he is too big for th...

I am not convinced. This is why. I want to be convinced too but I'm not. I grew up in Chicago and part of me loves that city. But I left a little over two years ago to try the SF Bay Area. When I left, I was paying $925/month for a 2 bedroom in an unpopular neighborhood. My parents were and are pay...

Re: Financial State of the States 2015 by Truth in Accounting

So in a way, one really doesn't have to be concerned about this in ERE because the state has to make up money but it'll likely have to do that via regular taxes. But in ER, most optimize their income to avoid taxes. So it's just a shell game and those in ER can easily play it and those who can't pla...

Here is one thread from 2013 that suggests the PHP version might be the issue -- maybe the host for this forum offers multiple versions and this phpbb install is using the wrong one? https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2190934 Edit: interestingly, no 500 error when posting this reply

I seem to always get a 500 error when posting new threads. If I go back to the forum and refresh, the post is present. I see it regularly with new threads. Every once in a while with comments.

Financial State of the States 2015 by Truth in Accounting

Truth in Accounting release a report on September 12, 2016 on the financial state of the united states: Financial State of the States 2015 (pdf) A brief look into the background of the organization looks like they are legitimate/unbiased (ie Wikipedia ). The report categories each state as a "sunshi...
