Re: Portfolio Charts

Sorry, not intraday. The current portfolio charts setup is inadequate and misleading. It shows historic returns for ONLY Dec 31 - Dec 31 periods, essentially n=1. The returns and losses (and comparative returns an losses) would be totally different looking at Jan 10 - Jan 10 for example, and likely ...

Re: Portfolio Charts

@Tyler

Leveraged or not, the max drawdown figured you have stated are wrong and misleading. A portfolio with a better worst year (December to December) performance may have a much worse max DD. Please clarify this on your site.

Re: Portfolio Charts

I am little disappointed with the calculators, particularly with regard to what is erroneously called 'deepest drawdown'. This is actually just the greatest year on year loss, looking ONLY at calendar year and not all of the possible annual periods. The actual max drawdown since 2002 is around 30%. ...

Best Online Freelance Work?

Hi all,

I'm curious to hear your opinions on the best online freelance work? Something with high demand, low supply, good pay, and that would take 50-100 hours to learn to a "professional" standard.

Any suggestions welcome!

Re: Permanent Portfolio in this environment?

Some would say that since the advent of unprecedented QE, these asset classes are no longer negatively correlated as they once were, which would destroy the utility of the PP. I need to look into this more.

Thanks Vexed. Great site!

Wow the portfolio has performed excellently. It seems that a 4% SWR is pretty safe (ignoring fees and taxes, and assuming future approximates past).

Permanent Portfolio in this environment?

Hi all I'm curious to hear what you think about the permanent portfolio allocation in this environment. On one hand we have looming rate hikes and a potential period of tight money, which seems to be the kryptonite of the PP. On the other hand we have Trump and potential reflation, social unrest, ge...

Re: Go to Med School or Work 5 More Years for FI?

Thanks both for the excellent advice - I really love these forums. There are truly brilliant (but also generous) people on here. @RealPerson I have a good amount of friends who are doctors, and most really enjoy their jobs. The ones who don't seem to be those who entered the profession hoping to bec...

Go to Med School or Work 5 More Years for FI?

Hi all I posted this in response to a thread I created 18m ago in the Money forum, but it now comes at the end of a 2 page thread about various UK tax issues, so I thought I would post separately (and in a more relevant forum). I am 30yo and have a wife and young child. I am currently working in inv...

Re: rental property with actual numbers

Your returns are way higher than you state, given the leverage. How much total cash did you actually put in? What is your net income post interest payments? How much principal are your tenants paying down for you every year?

Here are the key datapoint you need to look at for every investment: -Interest rate -Closing Costs (Depends on state & if cash or mortgage) -Property Tax rate -Historic utility costs -Age of building -Type of construction (so you know what the most common repair issues) -Age of roof, HVAC, plumbing...

Oh, forgot to mention: I have an employer pension that is currently worth £50k but I can't touch it until I'm 65 so I don't count it in my net worth calcs. I suppose if I stayed here for another 5y it would be worth a lot more !

SimpleLife investing strategy?

SimpleLife I've seen that you are heavily invested in real estate as a means to FIRE, and hoped to learn more about your strategy. How many houses to do you own? Where? What do the numbers look like? Can you recommend any other resources? Any experience with turnkey companies? How did GFC affect you...

Re: Radical use of real estate leverage? A.k.a. Buying and Living in the place you rent (or the parking space)

If you are mortgaging a property you have to pay Loan Origination fee (1-2% of value), Appraisal fee, Inspection, Attorney, Survey, Escrow, and get good property insurance. If you pay cash you can easily save $5-10k. When buying property make sure you know: -Property Tax rate -Historic utility cost...

I like Doug Short's composite valuation model, which is updated every month:

His model suggests a c.45% correction is necessary to return to historic means.

Re: Retiring and going to med school... What to invest in and when to pull the trigger?

Hi all A little update from my end, 18m later. I am now 30yo and have a young child. We have decided to move to the US (great timing post Brexit...). My finances are: - £65k in a taxed brokerage account, entirely in absolute return funds and cash - $50k of equity in a $400k house in the US, which we...

Gold only up c.3.5%...could have further to run? I recall some banks forecasting 1800 in the event of a trump win.

Would be good to hear everyone's thoughts.

Re: Warrior Diet during large exam?

Thanks both. I had considered bringing some food to eat during the exam to give me that extra boost, similar to how endurance athletes "train empty, race full", which has shown to offer improved performance. However, with an exam I am more worried about state dependent learning. If I am studying and...

Warrior Diet during large exam?

Hi all I have a long, taxing exam coming up in 5 months. Think MCAT level of difficulty with high emphasis on complex reasoning but also a decent amount of conceptual and factual recall. In short, its an 8 hour beast (roughly 9-5). It's the GAMSAT, if anyone is familiar. I also need to lose some fat...

Re: Should I Sell My Business And Retire At 33 Years Old?

Congrats! I think selling for $1m is way too low, however. Basically 3.3x EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation). Most slow/no growth, mature, average margin businesses will trade from 7-10x. High growth, high margin, strong branded businesses will sell for 10-15x+. ...

DAY 4: 234.2lbs (-3.4lbs)

Broke my fast earlier yesterday. My eating window was from 4pm - 8pm. I am also busy today from 5pm - 8pm, so will likely have a meal before. Weight is steadily coming off, but I was as low as 233 last week.
