Re: How to up your EQ?

Practice is talked about in Dragline's link. Discussed as "strengthening neural connections." But its not spelled out enough for me *what* to practice. I practiced lots when I pretended to be an extrovert for a few years for my career. I've reached a point now where the ROI in terms of career advanc...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

I feel similar: I like GMP because owning the market means you beat >50% of all investors. I like GB or similar because of strong evidence of 5% withdrawal rate. I have all my money in equity indexes because of "stocks for the long run is my religion" legacy investments. I want my future strategy to...

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

if you worked in an industry where this was a regular practice (definitely not illegal, in fact highly rewarded and commended when executed well) would you be o.k. with it, OR would it make you want to change industries? I would do it so long as it was the highest income I could find for my skill s...

Re: How to up your EQ?

Thank you for those resources. Difficult Conversations is very much the sort of thing i was looking for. Particularly the stuff about Impact vs. Intent. Seems useful, but i won't know until I have a few opportunities to try it out. @7Wb5, that is almost certainly part of what is going on. I minimize...

If you're going to mock me, you should be more direct about it. I'm good with nuance, but not subtlety. OTOH if serious, how remarkably self-aware of you.

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

I don't accept that anything is evil. Its intentionally manipulative and self serving. I would be angry to find if i was being manipulated, and I appreciate whistleblowers who reveal this stuff. But I don't hold it against anyone for using a loophole that benefits them.

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

@Riggerjack I have. Its not as good. ie, lower withdrawal rate. I'm comparing all stock (TSM/DM/EM) to a 5 way allocation (TSM/DM/EM/GLD/LTT). The benchmark calculator shows the all-stock version outperformed the 5 asset version most years. So if I disregard the Nixon shock, all-stock might be bette...

Re: Ray Jardine's "Blood Cleaner" concept? Also, making your own nano-silver?

Seems too good to be true That should be your first warning sign. It seems worth trying with skepticism/caution to me~ It would be worth trying if you got one for free AND could prove it was harmless. But, like Crazylemon said, cells are cells. If this thing zaps microbes, then it zaps blood and ti...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression

If you dont have 6 months of housing and food expenses saved up already, that should be your first order of business. If/once you do, THEN quit immediately. The first week after you quit, focus on eating well and getting good, quality sleep at night/exercise in the daytime. Meditation too, if you ar...

If I had found ERE earlier on in life I would've skipped college for an electrician apprenticeship I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that a lot of us would have made different decisions in life had we found ERE earlier. I certainly would have. The great thing about it is that you're never more tha...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

A tendency prevails to make a sharp distinction between such purely speculative ventures and genuinely sound investment. The distinction is one of degree only. There is no such thing as a nonspeculative investment. In a changing economy action always involves speculation. Investments may be good or...

How to up your EQ?

Other people are a black box to me. I'm frequently caught off guard by reactions to things I say and do. When conflicts with others aren't resolved easily, I tend to just find a way to work around them. This is usually perceived as arrogant and condescending. Then things get unpleasant. I know the M...

US expats, how bad is the double taxation? And @Campitor, what do you mean by "not an immigrant paradise," "3rd world medical infrastructure" and "risk of guerilla warfare?" DW and I have been talking about NZ for a while. But I'm concerned about the bad combination of lower wages, higher expenses, ...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

Well one lesson I remember from that book (4 pillars) was that the best investments are usually the least popular, and that diversified risk is *always* associated with higher return. So, the relevant question is whether gold is currently seen as a "safety" bet or a "risky" bet by the population at ...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

@Riggerjack I have read The Four Pillars of Investing by Bernstein, but I don't recall it being on one of Jacob's lists. And it is an extremely pro-index fund book, so either 1)how did it sour you on index funds or 2)which book are you referring to? I'm always interested in informed opinions that ar...

So far its a small fraction of my total portfolio. If you've read Antifragile or are familiar with the Ris...

Re: The Fourth Turning: Real or Tarot Card History?

a theory could also be good if it told you whether gold was properly valued. True. But in context, the theory of four turnings would be applied to foreseeing an impending crisis where gold owners would benefit. Maybe this is semantics. otherwise you might find yourself buying art or farm equipment ...

It's value is only appreciable by comparing it with other "theories of history", especially linear ones,...But if you wanted a reason to own some gold right now, you have one ready made. Well, you've certainly got my attention now. ;) A theory of any kind is only as good as the quality of its predi...

@Fish, good questions. 1)100%Small Cap Value gives a 6.1% PWR on portfoliocharts. I have a little money in vanguard's SCV fund, but I'm not counting on it making me rich. Mostly because I've learned more about the small cap premium since I bought it, and I'm skeptical that there's a reason for it to...

Re: Passive House Design

When people grow plants against houses, they often find expensive repairs in their future. I've read this before about climbing vines. That's why I consider tall trellises or espalier trees instead, which would also expand the options of what crops to use. Are you aware of any practical way to do w...

Yep. Poor wording on my part. but that doesn't mean "it'll be worse". maybe gold will experience appreciation like never seen before.
