Re: Hello From Canada (East/West and North)
Wow, impressive that you lived in Vancouver for 12k a year! Is that Canadian or US dollars? How did you pull that off? How much was your rent itself?

Re: How far are you willing to walk to work?
I used to live 5kms from work and used to take the bus to work and then walk home. The bus to work was awful because it was slow and packed. But, I also needed to be presentable. So, I didnt want to get all sweaty walking that far to work. But, getting home it didnt matter and was nicer to walk, I t...

Re: Exactly how cheap can housing be made?
In NZ around about $850 a month NZD for rent/ $520 USD
Around $150 NZD for utilities/ 91 USD - possibly more as this would be in a cold location.
Internet around $70 NZD/ 43 USD
All up around $1,070 NZD/ 653 USD,
This would be in a small town/rural area at the bottom of the south island

Re: Single pair of shoes
I dont know how to pull off something that fits business shoes and all the others. I think you can do everything else with one pair of shoes. This is what I used to do. Used to be very minimal. One pair of work shoes. One pair of shoes for everything else. I found it backfired a lot. Because, I woul...

4% rule in countries with a welfare state
The 4% rule does seem in some ways quite tailored to the USA which has more of a user pays society than some other countries. I live in a country with a welfare state, where there is free public healthcare, non-asset non--income tested pensions form the age of 65 and even a generous welfare net from...

Re: List of companies on the US stock exchanges
Ok I think I have found it now. I think this has everything. Well, at least on the three big exchanges. And can download excel. https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/stocks/screener Although, I am not sure whether or not its worth trying to download stocks listed on all the other US exchanges. Mayb...

List of companies on the US stock exchanges
Does anyone know how to download the list of companies on the US stock markets? Ideally in an excel format. I like to go through all stocks in systematic fashion to pick from. US has a few exchanges though. The NYSE, NASDAQ and the AMEX? Is that the three? Are there others? Maybe I need to download ...

Welfare
I have recently learned a lot more about Welfare in New Zealand and have been very surprised. I used to think (or assume I guess) that living on welfare was very much a bare minimum. However, in the past six months I have heard from a number of direct sources, a lot of information to suggest that we...

Re: BaristaFIRE, CoastFIRE, LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, PovertyFIRE etc
I have worked parttime for most of my working years. Parttime being 24-30 hours per week. I recently tried getting it down to 16 hours per week, but my workplace kept calling me in for extra hours due to other colleagues quitting or falling ill or pregnant. So that wasn't working and in reality I'v...

Re: BaristaFIRE, CoastFIRE, LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, PovertyFIRE etc
Unlike @thrifty++, I have some regrets from my FI path. I would have benefited from less focus. My heavy specialization made the world very tolerant of a narrow mindset. I don't think that served me. I spent a lot of time unnecessarily unhappy, fixated on my arbitrary line in the sand. I think for ...

Re: BaristaFIRE, CoastFIRE, LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, PovertyFIRE etc
I dont have any regrets myself about having taken a path of pursuing FI. My regrets are more the opposite - not pursuing FI at an earlier stage. I would have much more financial space had I done so earlier as well as then and would also have had more interesting experiences. Things have only been be...

Re: BaristaFIRE, CoastFIRE, LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, PovertyFIRE etc
One could probably make an argument those terms could fit the various levels en route to the realm of fatFire. ok. Yes thats true. I think it probably looks like: 1. CoastFIRE 2. BaristaFIRE 3. LeanFIRE 4. FIRE 5. FatFIRE Im not sure where the povertyFIRE sits in the mix of things but reading those...

Re: BaristaFIRE, CoastFIRE, LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, PovertyFIRE etc
I might be doing my own version of BaristaFIRE. In the Netherlands, you don't have to have a job to have good health insurance (which is one of the reasons why it's called BaristaFIRE because Starbucks (used to?) also provide health care as a benefit for parttime employees), but to reach full FI st...

BaristaFIRE, CoastFIRE, LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, PovertyFIRE etc
I recently came across a few modalities of FIRE which I found somewhat entertaining and also useful as a means of breaking down progress. I have heard the phrase fatFIRE for a long time and its clearly not my bag or very ERE oriented. And then I heard LeanFIRE which seems my approach. But I also rec...

Re: Which countries are the most resilient in the years to come?
@chenda - Yes young kiwis are very disgruntled about the situation and keep leaving. I dont think it can all be blamed on the isolation though. My parents generation had a great time. It used to be the land of milk and honey. But a succession of bad policies has caused the issues we face today as we...

Re: Which countries are the most resilient in the years to come?
It depends what you are considering. Just economics. Climate change. Safety. etc. I would have thought Germany is and will be economically very powerful for many years to come. New Zealand is not great from an economic perspective. The income is average, the opportunities for income growth are limit...

Re: Part time work full time happiness
Just crunched over $400k in net worth. Gosh this was a slow moving hard slog to hit this round of the 100ks. I thought I was gonna be there by beginning of March but as everyone all knows, all assets began a downward slide. So its taken longer. So, its really nice to be there now. I am enjoying work...

Re: Billable Hours
My experience of working in those types of environments tells me that how much of your time you bill is the key performance indicator supreme. That is despite lip service being paid to other performance indicators. What I found was best to do is rigorously focus time and energy on billing out and ri...

Re: Part timing to FI
I can see that… there are actually a number of w2 style part time roles I could easily see enjoying. It’s just that my 0.2 role had all the responsibility and after-hours leadership expectations of a standard professional track corporate career role. Not even close to worth it. Therein lies the rub...
