Re: Where do you fall on this 4-axis political spectrum?

Another one for Social Libertarianism here. I'm surprised I came out as progressive as I have, because lately I have noticed an internal swing in preference towards valuing localism and culture of place, I suspect that's more to do with my burgeoning ecological values rather than a desire for social...

Being a keen (bi)cycle mechanic, I just ordered the book just to see what the fuss is about. I was supposed to be having a spend free week too. Grr!

Re: Revenue Management...Evil?

I almost always use cost/unit in my decision to purchase goods in any given context, so I'd argue I would be immune to the tactic, at least where I buy the product often enough to register the change in price. My own moral compass would be ok with this line of work, providing the activity was being ...

Re: Best solution for ~3 mi professional commute: Electric Bike, Touring Bike, Scooter/Moped, Car, Shuttle, etc.?

+1 for slow biking. Getting electric assist for 3 miles seems like overkill for someone who is already accustomed to riding regularly, even on a hilly route. Even if it's not the easiest method of getting to work, I'd choose the 30 minute cycle with a shower at the office over an hour walk. Its the ...

All valid points here, if you want my two pence, raise the deflector shields and don't surround yourself with the kinds of people who spread rumours, that said, it's hard to fully disengage from all types of personalities, those who spread them, and those who take time to listen to them. You can fin...

Quick update; Our house purchase is proceeding well, we are likely to exchange contracts next week with a view to complete by the first week of May. We are almost home-owners... GULP! Sorry if I already mentioned this, didn't have time to re-read my recent posts, but for the benefit of UK re...

Be careful buying sight unseen on ebay, you can get warped or cracked cast iron pans which are obviously terrible to cook with.

Re: Modular indoor farming

The problem is not finding enough space to grow crops, there's plenty of that, it's all around us and under utilised. Minimising the resource inputs required to get it to the end user is the real challenge. This doesn't solve that problem, so bit of a red herring. As the expert puts it, why waste en...

Re: Boring-ness as a Weakness

It boils down to a personality thing right? Most are not self-assured, or confident in their own objectivity and would rather follow the herd, or delegate to greater authotirties. The only people I see actively pushing themselves into discomfort are the ones that care about their health, mental or p...

Re: Ways to reduce money supply?

Actually commercials banks do create money when they loan it. There are rules about how much they can loan based on how much they keep in reserve (to maintain solvency and ensure there's enough to meet demands for withdrawals.) Central banks have a role in controlling the amount of money in supply i...

@Riggerjack, did you read this book? IIRC the foreword mentions the author doesn't take profits from his writing, proceeds cover the cost of paper copies (we live in a money economy of course!), publishing expenses and website (where the book is free), the rest goes towards supporting an independent...

I'm surprised this hasn't been picked up by more ERE'ers. It reeks of Chop wood carry water, aka level 8 of the ERE wheaton scale. Not quite sure how I stumbled across this by, somehow by following a windy road of web URLs by UK writers on permaculture. Enjoying the read so far, only about 10% throu...

Re: Is living in the moment a privilege?

http://www.moneylessmanifesto.org/book/the-money-delusion/time-isnt-money/ Here's an interesting argument from a book I'm currently reading. To sum up the point, thinking about the past and future are obsessive symptoms of our modern society, having abandoned hunter gather lifestyle (which according...

Re: Daily multi-vitamin - Y or N?

Better to concentrate fixing deficiencies by adjusting an unhealthy diet, although it might make sense to take some specific individual supplements if you have specific dietary requirements or some very specific health condition. There's enough studies to suggest overdosing on certain vitamins can c...

Re: Flaws in libertarianism

Encroachment is perceived to be primarily violent. From a moral viewpoint, to me it would be acceptable in some circumstances, however I would argue that to do it ethically, that no damage to property must be committed, only enhancement . i.e. turning waste scrub land with barren soils into a permac...

Re: Flaws in libertarianism

I would be sceptical of the statement that there is no 'free' land remaining, whilst the vast majority of land is now in private hands, it's impossible to police all of it, all of the time. So long as your fly under the radar, you can make use of much privately owned land and property. Admittedly, n...
