Re: Buying a Government Job?

In 30 years I've never seen any nepotism in my part of the USDA. I don't even know how it would work. I'd sell my job if I could!

Re: Thought Experiment/Question

Hearing nieghbors drive up, or talking is very distracting, because I am not used to having people around me doing anything but visiting me. If I hear you talking, I expect you to be talking to me. Ugh, me too. But sometimes the acoustics work weird and I can hear (but not understand what they're s...

Re: How to quit coffee?

When I quit drinking Irish Breakfast tea (because I got tired of paying 80 bucks for a bag that only lasted me about 3 months) I just quit. I took aspirin for a couple of days which prevented any headaches that would have happened, then nothing. Now I drink a protein shake in the morning (more expen...

More land, further back, with a paved driveway. Maybe a Bigger, Brighter Bunker...
Yeah, more forest land. Even if I can't make any more money from it. My "bunker" is fine.

But would you really have anything to offer them? Some of the people with those certifications you mention can help people, others can't.

They sure don't have much information on that page. We get free wood chips in Dallas, a 9 mile drive, in my Toyota pickup.
But if that outfit delivers that might be a good deal.

They have those warranties because they expect you to sell the car before the brake pads wear out. My brake pads last forever it seems, so for me they probably do.

Re: Thought Experiment/Question

Vintage motorcycles.... and maybe a Daytona 675. I went to the vintage show in Corvallis Sunday and wandered around with my friend Dave, and almost every motorcycle I admired, he pointed out that I could buy. He was right, I could probably afford 90% of the bikes there, but I guess I don't want one ...

Re: Low growth, end of money and prioritising financial capital vs other forms

Dunno. In my situation, I pay about $15/year in property taxes (conservatively) for space necessary to grow to grow 3 semi-dwarf trees. So, could subtract that too. Don't buy dwarf or semi-dwarf, just buy normal apple trees and keep them small. I got the idea from an article in Mother Earth News an...

Is your current surgeon an employee of the insurance companies he accepts? Right, I didn't think so.
I don't know if my doctor is a surgeon (I don't get surgeries) but I think he is an employee of Kaiser Permanante.

I swim in rivers and lakes in Oregon. I've swam across the Columbia at Hood River about 10 times. Last September my triathlon had the swim in Foster Reservoir in Sweet Home, OR. I hate pools.

I was fretting a bit. Decent salons are not like lovers or buses. The homeless cats don't seem at all interested in learning about their role in the nitrogen cycle, no matter how long I babble on about the topic.

I still read Scott Adams' blog, though he frequently annoys me. I go there to read Dilbert then read any new entries he has up.

Also MMM since it's pretty easy to keep up with his output. But I rarely go to those forums any more. Even I don't want to read that much!

Anyways, I think what might be a good compromise for you, although a bit of an initial skill-acquisition hurdle, would be to start brewing your own black tea kombucha. Good idea. It almost tastes carbonated, from the acetic acid. I am tempted to start making it. I quit drinking black Irish Breakfas...

I inspect food for a living, and have to go where it is. The 4 people I'm training are all in their 20s so they can't telecommute either. There is still stuff being made and people have to be present to make it.

I've been watching an area not far from my place since around 1991, and the climax species there seems to be Scotch Broom, a non-native invasive species. There are Douglas-fir forests all around it but they don't seem able to get their seeds started in this area. I don't think it's likely due to soi...
