Re: How to live in the moment?

Some great responses above.

Meditation does help a lot.

I'd say to put time into pleasurable things like nature or time with people whose time you enjoy as one of the easy ways.

Noticing what emotions, physical sensations, cravings, sights you are experiencing is also a useful practice.

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

@halfmoon That was a gripping story, thank you for sharing. I sometimes wonder about where I am at a young age. I can relate to certain parts to the story, though the degree is different. Since striving for ERE, I've proven to myself I can be responsible with not spending and have multiple sources o...

Re: Consuming Cannabis Again

Thank you. Rereading my thoughts was an interesting refresher. What do you mean by tight ass? I thought we were all tightwads here. ;) On the potentially negative impacts: Definitely would be using it to cover some emotional pain and could struggle with the dependency piece. It contradicts my minima...

Consuming Cannabis Again

I've been over 6 months sober from cannabis now and I'm beginning to get disenchanted. I've been debating exploring the habit again, potentially working at a medical dispensary. I thought sobering up would motivate me and give me more energy, freeing up large swaths of time, connecting me to more pe...

Re: Saving up for your kids college from day 1 VS. just buying them a 1OO % debt free house ?

Couldn't you set it up so they learn about it at 18, get access to half of dividends at 24, and then full dividends at 32? That way they see the power of compounding interest while still enjoying the cash flow. You could add in a clause that they have to be able to save X by Z date to prove they can...

Re: What to do for six weeks b/w college graduation and full-time work?

The water was not literally freezing. Chiang Mai is northern Thailand, and we lived in the mountains there so much colder than the main town and especially the beaches and islands closer to the equator. Temperature was 40's Fahrenheit at night. It was cold enough that one girl would smuggle the hot ...

Re: What to do for six weeks b/w college graduation and full-time work?

@7w5, such a poetic way to describe it. In Thailand, I slept on bamboo sticks threaded together. Showered using a bucket of freezing cold water while fending off hungry mosquitos. Had to use filtered water for brushing my teeth if I didn't want to get sick. And it was all worth it. But I'm glad I en...

My favorite class was free on Stanford's youtube channel.

That said, I'd take the house. Even better would be a trust in my name where I can collect dividends but not touch underlying assets.

Re: What to do for six weeks b/w college graduation and full-time work?

C40's post reminds me of where I was March 2013- moving for school in August and split between 2 choices: volunteer teaching English in Thailand or spend time with this adorable girl I just met. I fell more into the love and enjoyed that till I moved. I dropped out of school in 2 weeks and ended up ...

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

Interesting idea that it costs 1000 condoms equivalent to cure one std. It's actually infinite since condoms are free at local colleges and std testing clinics. 10-17 if you're not on this forum and pay a whole dollar for each one. Chlamydia is $17, gonorrhea is $10 to cure, syphilis takes a penicil...

Re: My Experience in Vipassana

@Eureka I did one full retreat. I was going to do a second but ended up going to San Diego to hang with a girlfriend at the time. I still meditate 3-20 minutes every day. @Thrifty I wasn't perfect on mine with no exercise. I had a bunk bed to do rows and incline push ups off of. Mine was near Yosemi...

@Cmonkey that depends on whether they calculate a true up.

The easy answer is divide the max by the amount of paychecks left in the year if they dont true up.

My Experience in Vipassana

http://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8734 In the above topic, I was asked to elaborate on my experience in Vipassana and how it changed my life so this is my post about that. I heard about Vipassana through an ex-girlfriend. Shortly before she left to Vipassana for a 10 day me...

Introverted interpersonal.

Re: Anyone have experience with psilocybin mushroom microdosing?

I wouldn't call my experiences microdosing but I'd say to only consume psychadelics in a positive setting. If there's the slightest anxiety-get to a peaceful state first. I plan my experiences out. Getting to the top of a mountain before sunrise, then writing an intention, consuming, and enjoying th...

Re: "Skin Hunger" - is affection required for most people to feel fully nourished?

The isolation gets dangerous at some point for some people. Some like to hermit but when just born, touch is a requirement for healthy brain development.

I feel better now that I cuddle multiple times a week with my lover.

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

I've been seriously thinking about getting one too. My current stance on kids is that I want to wait until 30 then reconsider but right now I don't see myself enjoying having kids, except for being able to teach them how things work and learning with them. Vasalgel looks like a good options whenever...

Trad/Roth (at end of year based on tax bracket) + HSA (keep the bill on your medical expenses after opening the HSA and you can take out that amount later)

Re: Best break-up Advice?

Sorry to hear about the break up. Rebounding never worked for me, at least not in the first few months. In August of 2015 I had a break up with the girl I'd spent more years with than anyone else, we'd lived together at multiple points-she moved to school then my place during vacation times/holidays...

Re: Why are men more violent

+1 fiby41 In my own experience women are often more violent-they just get off the hook easier. My friend saw a woman and man fighting went over to defend the girl and realized she was the one assaulting him, he just walked away. I've been lucky to have relatively relaxed girlfriends but being the yo...

Re: Problems money can't solve?

No matter where you go, there you are. Money buys security, freedom, and some power- that's it.

It can buy great mentors to help with relationships, health, etc. but it can't do the work for you of changing beliefs and all that.

One great tool but just that.

Is the Small Value Premium Over?

I look at Small Value and the PE is 24.7 compared to Total Stock Market of 24.1, earnings growth rate is lower, return on equity is lower, 30% is in Financials and 20% is in Industrials. Doesn't look very attractive.

Am I missing something?

Re: strategies from the ERE book - dumbed down explanation

Heterotelic is a response that moves towards 1 goal and away from another while homeotilic moves towards both. ie- I want to reach a 3% wr and weigh 150lbs. Fasting lowers my expenses and weight so it is homeotilic. Buying some weight loss pill or lap band surgery is heterotelic since I'd increase m...
