Re: Move to NYC?

Like Chris pointed out, NYC will be substantially more expensive than many other cities. It's doable, but you'll most likely want to consider roommates if you're looking to save on housing in a decent area. Studios are usually not affordable if you're thinking of retiring early. You have to be okay ...

Re: The Secret Shame of Middle Class Americans

I wonder if this article is worth sharing on Facebook... maybe get a like or two ;) It definitely takes guts to write it, though the author's intentions may not be so benevolent (which isn't a bad[i/] thing, per say). However long it took him to realize this, at least it may help other people realiz...

Re: Buy or Rent Dilemma

Always make sure you're comparing apples to apples. Renting a 3/2 house versus buying a 3/2 house is the correct approach. Way too many people compare a 3/2 house with a 2/1 apartment. That's conflating too many details to arrive at a meaningful answer. That's a good point. You can really only comp...

Re: On the Warrior Diet: How to avoid energy slumps?

On the WD if I slip up and say, eat a bagel (full of carbs) during the day I will definitely tank in terms of energy levels. I think following the diet in terms of minimal daytime eating will prevent those fluctuations in energy levels. And if you do feel for something, then only tea, coffe, a fruit...

Re: Buy or Rent Dilemma

Thanks for all the input. I checked the calculators again and they do lean more towards buying, considering that a home would be 3 or more bedrooms (and even a 2-bedroom apartment does not compare). Like George mentioned, 250k is the bare bare minimum, and this is a suburb of NYC with train access, ...

Buy or Rent Dilemma

DH wants to buy a house, which makes him excited, and me anxious. We live in the NYC metropolitan area, which means a decent house is more than $250,000 with property taxes of 3.8% or higher. Currently we pay a very reasonable price for our 1-bedroom apartment (20% of my after-tax salary, including ...

Re: Getting out of the house during winter

These are great ideas and tips. I organized a potluck/feast dinner with some friends for the weekend, and also popped out some board games to play with DH and some friends. We really got into them (Settlers of Catan, Machikoro, and yes, Yu-Gi-Oh :) so that's been good. Next on the list will be some ...

Getting out of the house during winter

Winter is always a drag for me. When I'm not at work I spend a lot of time cooped up in the house, which is slowly driving me crazy. Anyone have recommendations for winter-time activities that are ERE-aligned? And what kind of social/group things can be done, too? Oddly I tend to feel like most of m...

Re: My day off

I accumulate sick days, 1 per month, and I use them when I feel like it (sick or not). No one asks questions, but I work in public education so I think people expect that you'll need some mental health days. Also, thanks to union rules, your boss can't even ask you about them until you've taken 10+ ...

Re: Exfoliating and best practices for skin care?

Like J_L13 said, it may very well depend on the individual. If you have dry scalp (and not dandruff, which is caused by a fungus) then it may very well be that your scalp is dehydrated. Therefore, Head and Shoulders and other commercial shampoos/conditioners will do more harm than good. They all dry...

I work in public education, and I would not it to anyone. It's a means to FI. It's a stable government job, though the pay isn't necessarily extravagant

@heyhey ... I'd consider "winning" to be anything you're happy with :D The most useful part of doing it was knowing that, wow, I could. It's the most I've ever written in my life.
