Re: Chenda's sober ramblings.

I have never understood the appeal of alcohol. I dabbled a little at university, trying to work out what the big deal is, but never got into it properly and haven't had a drop for at least 20 years. I often read euphoric accounts from people who have given up alcohol or smoking. It is clear that the...

Re: DutchGirl's journal

Bear in mind the effect of higher inflation over the last few years so even though you might have "broken even" over the last two years your potential spending power has diminished. On the other hand, you are two years closer to receiving the state pension so your stash is needed for two f...

Re: DutchGirl's journal

Even ignoring major global events, humans are continually bad to each other. People say and do horrible things to each other in all parts of the world. There's no point worrying about these things. Humanity will always disappoint. The best thing you can do is to avoid contributing to these problems ...

I am a little pissed off that he doesn't acknowledge that I WAS FUCKING RIGHT that his tiredness wasn't a normal level for someone age 45-50 and that he needed to go see a doctor to get some tests, and he is still not fully convinced that the registration was correct or that the apnea causes the sl...

Re: DutchGirl's journal

I have had my own way of 1 year syndrome though, radamfi, as I probably should have quit this particular job a few years ago (and find something else), but I was always thinking: oh, I'll stick with it for a little bit longer even though it's not so enjoyable anymore, because I know what I have but...

Well done! Nice to see my favourite journal reach the ultimate goal. Also, without the *one more year* syndrome that afflicted me!

Re: Online casino bonuses and matched betting

I've known about matched betting for years but didn't realise until recently that there are dedicated websites to help you do matched betting. I recently joined Profit Accumulator by recommendation and then realised there were other sites, such as the previously mentioned Oddsmonkey. I used to take ...

Re: Online casino bonuses and matched betting

I've seen enough advertised deals on sports betting to think about it, but haven't tried it out A lot of the deals are along the lines of: your first bet(s) up to $1,000 is risk free. I think you do have to bet that money again before withdrawing, which adds to the hassle. There are probably 10 or ...

Online casino bonuses and matched betting

Has anyone exploited online casino bonuses or done matched betting for a bit of extra money? This seems like an easy side hustle that you can do whenever you feel like it. Obviously in some countries this is not legal. In the UK, not only is it legal, it is tax free.

Re: 2020

So, I stopped working on 31st March 2020 around the time the pandemic had created losses in the market with a net worth of £324377. Just over 18 months later, I started looking for a job again, an IT job that is mostly remote working. Well, I have found a job with a good salary and I am just waitin...

“Advisors are worried that the bull market and reduced spending during the pandemic among those who retired early by choice may have skewed their perspective on retirement readiness. They recommend a dose of realism There’s an exaggerated financial optimism happening right now,” says Sharon Oberlan...

Re: A Jacob Mention

So do you guys think we could get along if we lived in a Dutch-style car-free bicycle-friendly city? Let’s give it the old college try! Dutch cities are indeed the most bicycle friendly in the world. But there is no "car free" Dutch city. Dutch people use bikes a lot but they also use car...

Re: Great job but... A Danish FI journal

Second stage is after official retirement age, when the state pension and work pension will start paying out. In my case those two will completely cover my expenses with extra to, I guess, give away. So my personal savings/investments only need to cover the 20 or so years between the two stages. Ca...

...awww, shoot guys, looking back I see I missed my anniversary: first post here was Sat, 17 Sep 2011 . Just look how far you've come in the last 10 years! You had a mere 13k in your pot back then. I was lucky in that I discovered FIRE (although I didn't know what it was called until I started read...

PS. radamfi, that's awesome! I know that in the Netherlands, a lot of libraries offer free Dutch lessons and "taalmaatjes" - language buddies - to practise Dutch with. I don't know whether currently, with Corona, they allow for online lessons as well. That would be nice for you! I found t...

I still visit this website every so often, just to read your journal. Originally because I wanted to retire in the Netherlands but it has become a good story in its own right. People might remember me being very upset about Brexit a few years ago which would make it difficult or impossible to retire...
