Re: yes or no major stock market correction in 2015-2016
I'm going to stick my neck out and say, "Maybe, maybe not." I really think the timing of such things is unknowable. It will happen someday, then we'll have the next bull cycle. Over the timeframes I invest for, it's all noise. If PEs get up to 80, it could be Japan all over, but starting ...

Re: Why No ERE Love For Investing in Rental Property?
Why isn't rental property more popular here? My guess is that it's not because of rental properties per say, just that this board leans heavily toward the INTJ crowd, and they'd be more likely to avoid investment ideas that rely on forced interactions with random people (tenants). Some great points...

Re: Most effective way to live with roommates?
Tip: Make sure your roommate understand up front they are renting a room not your entire home and ensure their "stuff" stays in their room when not in use.

Re: Request for “TAE" - Tax Avoidance Extreme
This matter of taxation is of the utmost importance to me. While the OP lives in one of the highest tax burden states, I reside by choice in a state with very close to the lowest overall personal tax burden in the nation and it saves me multiples of thousands annually as a result. It is no light mat...

Re: Quality resources on Van Living? (Books are most useful to me)
For me this conversation is one of the few that is NOT all about the money. If I personally cared little for the mobile life and the benefits it offers (ie travel, freedom, access to remote scenic places as part of life) I might agree that it may not worth the trade off financially. The only way you...

Re: You can now put over $50k/yr into Roth through after-tax 401k contributions
I personally was very pleased with this IRS clarification on the matter and immediately updated my 401K contributions to take full advantage of this. There are a few compelling reasons for many ERE's to do this, mostly centered around impact to their MAGI, reduced investment fees if excellent choice...

Re: Best place to store dirty laundry?
Strongly agree on the investment in wool garments. Especially for minimalists and those with extended mobile living. They are soft and even if you are slightly irritated by the natural fibers and or manufacturing chemicals, a light wash with a soft soap should eliminate the problem. I have worn shir...

While it is certainly true that I have a few choice pieces of Patagonia gear, some purchased second hand, they are not owned for purpose of fashion, are worn only for the appropriate application, and good grief most certainly not patterned in anyway. I left the North Face camp long ago due to qualit...

Re: Greetings from Wyoming
Nice! It was a choice and one weighed very carefully. I had the option of Texas as well and that was runner up. All states with personal income tax, though possible and even desirable in cases, were eliminated as options. I waited and when the opportunity arose, I promoted and was relocated across m...

Mostly undeniable. Rather unusual as an ad, but how else do you target those who are free from the vicious cycle of consumerism if you need their business? Targeted advertising for the frugal.

Re: The Beginning of Faith
This is something that bothers me and I'd like to explain. The existence of Hell is conceptualized mythologically in various ways, but these are best taken metaphorically than literally. If you associate God with light, Hell is really an "outer darkness" or the total absence of God. Heave...

Adaptation is the key to survival in a changing and uncertain world and you are certainly demonstrating incredible resilience. May peace and pr...

That's not the Devil's Tower is it? Looks like a "thinner" version. It most certainly is, but this is a photo taken from the northwestern part of the monument. The most famous photos of the monument are from the south and east as they are easily accessible and give the illusion that this ...

Kudos to the dude. That was an enjoyable read. Great choice on VTSAX. Most regular users of this forum are engaged enough with their investments to not need their mutual fund portfolio rebalanced automatically in exchange for higher fees.

Re: To Sell or Not to Sell
With a vehicle that is new and assuming it has been meticulously maintained and has a remaining warranty, I struggle to see the value in replacing it for the headache someone else is trying to offload. Assuming you need a car at all and that the car meets your needs, I would keep the vehicle and met...
