Re: Eliminating Facebook from our lives?

Never used FB, never will. I'm intrigued by the "privacy-friendly" social media networks that pop up every once in a while, but never seem to achieve critical mass. Has anyone tried Ello, Vivaldi, Minds, or any of that ilk?

Re: Amazon is a brutal place to work

The always-readable Mark Suster had an interesting take on this . He blames the consumers and investors to some extent for insisting on overnight delivery and 100x returns, respectively. He also points out what many here have said about the tradeoffs of working at a game-changing startup... and what...

Re: Books to bring on a deserted island.

Anytime I encounter a piece this well-hewn, I have to pause to savor and offer silent applause, so that makes a long book last even longer. Yes, this! Bonus points if time on the desert island can be used to retell Moby-Dick in the style of P.G. Wodehouse. :D My selections: - Structure and Interpre...

Re: Walkscore

98, "walker's paradise". Yeaah! Rents are high due to proximity to NYC, but we've owned for a while so I don't know exactly how high. $2000 for a 1-bed wouldn't be unheard of. My office in downtown New York gets a perfect 100 score, and you can expect to pay $2700-3500 for a 1-bedroom apar...

Re: Do you actually plan on stop working when you can?

When you're making a six figure income, are a supervisor and can work from home as you see fit, it makes sense to keep doing it even if you don't enjoy it, because it never hurts to have a few hundred extra thousand dollars in the bank/index fund. @SimpleLife, part of me agrees with this, but only ...

Another Architect (INTJ-A), at least according to this test. Introverted: 40%; Intuitive: 25%; Thinking: 13%; Judging: 39%; Assertive: 44%. Role: Analyst. Strategy: Living aggressively below my means... no wait, "Confident Individualism". I'm with Peanut in that a lot of MBTI questions see...

Camping cot & housewares for barter, pickup in NYC

In my ongoing quest to minimize my stuff, I have a few nice things that are too heavy or fragile to ship to eBay buyers. Before dealing with Craigslist, I'd like to offer these to any ERErs who are interested and can pick up on weekdays in NYC, Jersey City, or Hoboken: REI camping cot , no longer av...

Re: Freegan's journal

Freegan, glad to hear you're moving forward in a direction that's positive for you. I hope you get some time to step back and look at the big picture, which is so hard to do in the middle of negotiating a transition. And I would totally watch that movie about the 50s housewife (maybe Hitchcock has m...

And we'll have Uber-fication as well as robo-fication, so if we can't afford $400 for a RoboDentist we can just use our smartphones to borrow someone else's. Now I'm looking forward to being a cranky, homebound immortal...

Re: Freegan's journal

Hi Freegan, (really enjoy your journal by the way) A good friend of mine was in a similar situation and ended up quitting. However, he had a detailed employment contract that supported his argument that he was owed a good chunk of severance. He also had a good relationship with his boss and ended up...

Re: $hit job is depressing--advice?

You say a computer could do your job -- can you identify the inefficient parts of your work and write some code to automate them? Or use the time and quiet to start taking notes for your own novel, or screenplay, or music, or blog. Sounds like you've been consuming a lot of media -- would it be more...

Hey, WorkforceRefugee. Welcome and congrats on your investing success. It would be interesting to hear more about your strategies if you'd like to share. Re: The Counterculture

Just saw an interesting blog post that made me think of this thread: Geeks, MOPs, and sociopaths in subculture evolution . I like his perspective on understanding the ideal ratio of dabblers to creators in a subculture, and his suggestions on how to optimize a subculture in the face of an invasion b...

Re: What would you change in your life if money were not a factor?

Somewhat inspired by jennypenny's litter bearers ;) I would pay to make sure I was getting the most environmentally friendly option for whatever I needed. Since I'd rather DIY if possible, this would include budget for classes and the free time to take them. @Zalo: Is there a cheaper (even if more t...

Another woman (in my 40s) here to say hello and welcome. I read somewhere, can't recall or find where, that this forum is at least 33% female.

Personally, haven't done a journal yet because I already spend enough time typing on the computer for work. But I'll look forward to reading yours!

Re: The cultural shift from sustainability to resilience

For those commenting on the school system, do you think it's possible to teach resilience (or basic critical thinking/scientific method) integrated into life skills? Not everyone has the ability or interest to be a philosopher who questions everything in a very abstract sense. To the points about po...

Re: Is sugar a dangerous drug?

@Stoneage, congrats, very inspiring! What do you do to keep sugar cravings under control? Soda and other processed foods are definitely designed to be addictive, err, "maximize consumer appeal". Salt Sugar Fat by Michael Moss goes into this in detail (may have been mentioned on the forum)....

Re: Walking as Transportation

It is definitely humanly possible. I'm no endurance athlete but can easily get to a steady walking pace of an 18 minute mile, or 16 minute mile if I speed up to a slow jog to cross streets. I've tracked this using Endomondo and also my phone's stopwatch over 5-10 mile walks (yes, I need a new hobby)...
