Re: Do you find it challenging to live in the same place for years on end?

Around a year ago, we moved to our intended retirement home, purchased nearly 20 years earlier. We could not be in a better location. Prior to here, we lived in Yuma, AZ, for nearly 18 years, a good mix of cost/expense, but not good for long-term on a fixed income.

Re: How to Invest 100k in Real Estate?

A specific example is in FEB 2013, a solo 401k type account bought a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1 car garage brick home for $77,500, which is being rented out at $805/month.

Re: ERE City (US)

The philosophy of getting like-minded individuals into the same area has come up many times. Relatively recent was the free state project which “voted” to get independent minded folks to move to New Hampshire. Acting on our own, on retirement we moved to the city of Tucson, Arizona. “Great” for inde...

Re: The drawbacks of displaying financial success

From somewhere in the past, I recall an aspect of a book or movie about “mafia”, something along the lives of the old guy telling the young to avoid a Cadillac, just get a Chevy and upgrade it as desired on the inside… Re the “status symbol” for early retired, I opine that merely being retired early...

Re: Blocked sink success

Where we previously rented, the plumbing crew sent by the landlord tried a hose thing on the bathroom sink… Essentially it’s like a balloon that goes in the pipe, the water pressure inflates the balloon then the water is SUPPOSED to force the gunk along the drainpipe.. They put it in, and went outsi...

Re: Garden Log

We went out for a 5:00 AM walk this morning, and after our recent rains noted amaranth growing in the public right of way, where it will shortly be trampled… We decided to “rescue” a bag full of the seedlings and put them around our lot.

Re: What do you guys recommend for ID Theft Protection?

Retired Army civil service here. The wife and I “finally” got our OPM letter a little over a week ago. Signed up for the monitoring, checked our credit reports, didn’t see anything unusual. Friends suggested “Lifelock”. I read thru their website, and although it doesn’t impress me, I may be missing ...

Opinion: Currency, debt, the economy, etc., is being manipulated not only to enrich the elite, but to destroy any "middle class".

Re: Why does society cater to people with kids and shun those without?

We never tolerated our daughter being a “nuisance” while out in public, and now she expresses the same sentiment about others who ignore a child being a “nuisance”.

Opinion: The world is over-populated. All incentives to have more children need to be eliminated.

Re: Saving money by DIY

Younger / poorer / healthier, I did LOTS of repairs myself. Other than unique stuff for ourselves, as a “FIRE” I prefer to pay someone rather than scrape my knuckles…. And I reminded our daughter this afternoon of the “upside” of reaching the point of getting to where you can work / tinker / repair ...

Re: Do you find it challenging to live in the same place for years on end?

We’ve been in the same place since 1997, I am WAY past being ready to leave here. The wife has put in her retirement paperwork, so we’ve at least got a “countdown” running.

Re: Social attitudes regarding sex and relationships

Get the politicians and bureaucrats out of marriage, and the rest of private, individual interaction. If any sentient beings voluntarily want a “religious” service binding them before their deity, it’s their decision, which should have NO legal consequences outside of their chosen religion. No one o...

Re: Enjoyable physics books

A study guide intended to “brush up” for a physics Graduate Record Exam (GRE) might be of help. To see what you do, or don’t know, you could try a practice GRE test. http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/practice_book_physics.pdf Isaac Asimov wrote several books on physics. The Georgia State University has a...

Re: How many of you are financially independent? What have you done since FI? What did you do before FI?

It depends. We have a paid for house, solar panels, garden, pensions, rental income, blah, blah, BUT, we cannot know what the politicians are going to do to us. Cut off our pensions? If all else remained the same, we could go on. Add rent controls in an inflationary environment, then we’re in troubl...

Re: How would you tackle planning a frugal wedding?

Being a cynic, and retired lawyer, I’ve seen WAY too many divorces. Personal opinion and observation is that the couples who had a simple ceremony are more likely to stick together… If religious, a marriage in a church does not require the church be filled. I’ve seen them done before or after a regu...

Re: Storing food/water for emergency event

There are plenty of permaculture / prepper / survivalist websites and discussion forums “out there”, there may even be meetups of such groups near you... I firmly believe that having some stored water, food, first aid, and other supplies is a prudent physical type of “insurance policy”, as well as i...
