Re: Investments Trade Log

Considering MOS after today's drop. Not sure it's the right time quite yet, but prices are firming and their cost management looks good. They also have a decent amount of cash on the balance sheet and so can support the dividend. Glad I waited to see what they would do with that dividend. Putting m...

Re: cmonkey's journal

So I guess I'm due a photo update. It's been a long time since I showed a good looking garden. We've been practically living outside each night now that the weather is good and usually don't come in until it gets dark. I finally made a proper compost pile. I'm going to flip it once more and then put...

The debt might not have been as big of a deal with ZIRP in place, but now that rates are rising its definitely going to put more pressure on them.

Re: How can you be (semi) retired while still having a mortgage?

There really are different degrees of FI and I think the 1st degree is having your current investment income cover your current expenses. 2nd degree might be extending that out for X number of years, say if you expect your dividends to be safe for at least the next 3-5 years. 3rd degree would be FI ...

T is also above 5% again and has much better debt/book value, although that might change if/when they buy TWX. It all depends how they put the merger to work, same with VZ.

Chicago Uber

Does anyone have any experience taking Uber transit in the Chicago area?

How reliable is it? How safe is it?

More specifically, around down town Chicago area, the Cicero area and the Glencoe/Highland Park area (up north).

Pick up O whenever you see it fall substantially as it is usually very overpriced for its growth rate.

Do you have a yield target for O? It has been falling nicely for the past month and I'd like to pick it up. Looks like yield is higher now than it has been in about 3-4 years.

Re: Solid REITs?

I currently have some funds in SBRA. They have come down nicely over the past few days as they announced an upcoming merger and seemingly reported disappointing earnings, even though they raised guidance. The P/AFFO and yield are nice. Also have some funds in SNH, but the growth is limited here. It ...

Re: Garden Log

Has anyone noticed whether you have more or less bees this year compared to the past...? From our side, I was seeing quite a few bumble bees in April, but lately we haven't been seeing anything. DW pays attention quite a bit and hasn't seen hardly anything. I paid attention today and agreed, I didn'...

Re: Deer tick removal tools

For ticks, we used to light a match and hold it up to the tick. The tick will detach itself and try to crawl away from the fire and then you can dispose.

I hope it's on your dog and not you!

Re: Soliciting suggestions for new ERE blog theme

I suppose I have a suggestion - if you add any sort of "list" to the site, the only thing that ever bugged me about the blog was no archive page! I know there are unofficial lists, but it's just not the same.

The forum and blog themes are entirely separate. So, you do get what we have right now :-D

Oh I didn't see he was talking about the blog.

Well in that case, I definitely vote no change. The simple interface is one of the things that hooked me. Perhaps I'm just change averse though. :?

Re: Soliciting suggestions for new ERE blog theme

I actually like the current theme a lot. I'm not sure how those themes in the link would translate into a forum look. All the examples I saw were in blog format. Do we have examples of forums running on those themes? Whatever theme we have, it should NOT be flashy/trendy. Simple and efficient! So, r...

Re: Coffee consumption questions

When I am in the office I am limited by what I bring which is just a thermos full - 4 fluid cups (2 coffee mugs). This limitation is enforced by having no free coffee available and I am way too cheap to buy Aramark dishwater at 1.99 a cup. When I'm home...well, you might double that. I try...

Re: cmonkey's journal

I don't think this is correct. The HSA trustee issues a 5498 to the IRS and a copy to you showing the FMV, just as with an IRA. As with an IRA, no detail on holdings is reported. Then it's probably the same with an HSA. All that UBTI mumbo jumbo. Give me straight up tax free dividends all the way u...

Re: cmonkey's journal

Interesting. HSAs are essentially black boxes to the IRS, all they see is one number - contributions. They don't know what the holdings are. You could turn it into a trading account and keep all the gains tax free. Perhaps it would be a flag to get audited if your UBTI was really high, yet you didn'...

Re: cmonkey's journal

@halfmoon, Because of the tax information packet I received from them. I attempted to read through it, but gave up in exhaustion. Not simple enough! With an HSA, its all tax free so no need to worry about messing around with any of it. I might just avoid them all together since REITs offer better re...

April 2017 April continued the great year we are having in terms of savings rate. I didn't really attempt to save money anywhere and it was still a great month. Grocery expenses in particular are turning out great this year. For the year we are sitting at 86% savings. I read through The Dhando Inve...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Work shifts suck big time. Seems I go through one every 1-2 years as well. I've had 3 different cubicles since starting my current position 3.5 years ago. I'm pretty sure it's the only role that facilities plays - lets just move people around, because we 'are'. The next will be in just over a year w...
