Re: Intermittent Fasting on 500 mile Hikes

I think there are different definitions being used for fasting. The OP says 10+ hours. Yeah, if that's the case I misunderstood. I thought he meant 10 hours travel time per day with days of essentially skipping food thrown in a couple times a week (that's what IFers I know do--24 hours or longer w/...

Re: Intermittent Fasting on 500 mile Hikes

Doesn't sound like a great idea to me, especially if the hike is covers remote, rugged terrain. And I don't know exactly what you mean by fasting. Just a suggestion, assuming you are talking about going 24 hours or more between meals when you say fasting, but I'd try getting the first 100-200 miles ...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

I don't watch any TV unless it is sports, certainly not "news". It's all really political commentary (news-mentary) anyway. Some like Hannity are up-front about it, others less so. Koppel is just a left version of Hannity (his commentary that guys who do commentary like Hannity are bad is the only t...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

It's getting to the point I cannot stomach "watching" what's going on in Washington any more. Since there are no news-mentary sources that align with my perspective (they are all too far left of me or too far right of me) I had been trying to do the dumbell thing by splitting my time evenly between ...

Re: Low volatility

Dragline, my guess is that index funds are possibly more of a symptom than a cause. Index funds have been out there and fairly popular during past periods of high volatility. What the CBOE guy I heard on the radio said when asked if it was due to index funds, was that the trend is investors moving a...

Low volatility

Sorry, no detailed analytical link, but I heard on the radio this morning yesterday marked the least volatile day "ever" (i.e., since VIX was established). The country (and the world) certainly does not feel like a less volatile place. Maybe all the uncertainty has driven investors collectively into...

Re: Singledom v coupledom

No matter who you date, you get judged on where you live. I probably have 2X-10X+ the net worth of most women I date, but they can't "see" net worth, they just see the apartment, so they assume you don't have much money and aren't that successful since you are renting a dated apartment and hang out...

Re: Budgeting for Extortion

Driving on 95 (not in podunk either) ... stopped by state troopers in a speed trap (with tons of other people  ). They wrote the ticket, and then you could pay it at the conveniently located 'station' in the adjacent rest area. If you didn't do it then (I think he said within 24 hours), they "...

Re: Mechanical protection against garden slugs?

Mulch with a lot of coarse pieces is heaven for slugs and snails. They are relatively nocturnal and need somewhere cool and damp out of the sunlight to spend their days. Its also where they lay their eggs. Drip irrigation helps versus broadcast irrigation. Crushed egg shells make a barrier around pl...

I agree with Dragline to start slow, you'll be a stranger at first. In my experience the 4 year old is likely to furnish you with ideas once comfortable around you, sometimes an exhausting superabundance of them. Your sister is also a great source of ideas wrt his interests. Express interest in what...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

As someone without a horse in the race (my identity is not tied to hating Trump or loving him) I think the administration does have a pretty huge communication problem. Not sure that this new guy will fix it, seems unlikely, since it appears no effort is being made to ensure consistency in what is s...

Another +1 for what jacob said. If he's going to use/need it in the next 12 months, it's in a pretty good place already, though as mentioned he could shop around for slightly higher interest.

jennypenny, I've considered it, but that's about all. Right now my estate plan is basically 42.5% to each kid and 5% to each of my three siblings. That's basically it. Once I get through with work and get settled, and as the kids get older and further into their lives I will probably think about cus...

Ha, okay. I guess I'm unusual for an analytic-minded planner-type in that I can easily shed all that when I step back to look at the "big picture" and let things be simple and happily use that simplicity clear a path when I dive back into the weeds. IRL I feel like a weirdo. Here, I feel like even m...

@IlliniDave: I used to babysit the son of a teenage hippie Mom, and he grew up to be an investment banker like his grandfather, so you might want to consider skip to 3rd generation in your bequests. OTOH, I knew a gentleman who married and had kids before WW2 and lived to be 95 and meet some of his...

Re: Instructions for family members

Maybe I should just say "Don't spend it all in one place" and leave it at that. To hedge an untimely demise I considered setting up trusts with my estate that would pay my daughters something like 2%/yr until they hit 50, then 3% until 65 when they would get the entire balance, with the throw...

You are closer to ERE then I am--my goal lifestyle numbers are quite similar to yours but I am a household of 1 with little likelihood of that changing. Compounding does seem to accelerate progress, especially towards the end. In the last 12 months my pile of investment assets has returned more than...

Nice to hear things are sort of realigning. From a silly, new-agey, perspective the universe seems to offer up a lot of opportunity to those who are receptive to it. (Of course, being in a relatively wealthy, stable, society means our universe is among the more benign in human experience.) One of th...

Re: Instructions for family members

For me it doesn't matter too much, no one depends on my financial savvy for their day-to-day or lifelong financial well-being. In addition to what Dragline said, many Americans (dunno how it works elsewhere) do most of their saving and investing in retirement accounts where there aren't any incremental taxes on inter-account transactions/distributions. It's not taxed until withdrawal from the account when the withdrawal is ...

Some Figgerin' As I approach the autumn of my life it's time to start thinking about the harvest. I've spent the last 30 years shoveling assets into a pile and tending it. I've kicked the can down the road in terms of coming up with a way of deploying assets so that they support me rather than me s...

Marrying for sex is like buying a car for the free storage unit in the trunk. Yes, it does have several cubic feet of storage, and it's free, but that's hardly the point. I know a lot of people who view it the other way around  Maybe that's why the statistics don't live up to the romantic idea...
