Re: Coursera/Georgia Tech Computacional Investing Part 1 Sep
I signed up for it. The first two weeks went really slow, which I'm actually happy about as I've started some other courses simultaneously. I wouldn't hesitate to try to catch up if you can spare a few hours. I haven't bought the book yet. It's $10 on Kindle and if you don't have time for the videos...

Re: Coursera/Georgia Tech Computacional Investing Part 1 Sep
@ JamesR - I was hoping to see you and Simple Aly sign up. Oh well...There's still time to change your mind;-) Thanks for thinking of me. :D The course sounds really fascinating. Sadly my job has me so busy right now that the last six or so Coursera courses I signed up for, I barely had time to wat...

Re: What are the biggest obstacles you've faced getting to E
Investment-wise I'm hugely risk averse. I hold most of my assets in cash (albeit in a basket of currencies) yielding near 0% interest. I can't bring myself to open large long positions in stocks right now. Hence my investment income is too low for ERE and although I'm sitting on some unrealized cap ...

Your story is so insightful. I hope you can find your passion. By "roam the earth" do you mean literally? Maybe you could consider teaching English abroad or helpx.net.

Re: The cost-benefit of becoming a dentist/doctor
To us, the thought of no parental leave and just 2 weeks vacation seems ridiculous. There are probably billions of people in the developing world who think that a five-minute bathroom break and a full meal would be amazing. As an employer if I had the choice between an employee who wanted long vaca...

Re: The cost-benefit of becoming a dentist/doctor
I presume he went for the "income tax is unconstitutional" scam. At least the inmates in that prison will be flossing every day I presume. ;) No, a combination of letting his assistants do too much of the professional work (requiring a license) and being too aggressive with insurance bill...

Re: The cost-benefit of becoming a dentist/doctor
The richest dentist I knew had an office that literally had a root canal assembly line. The owner would just cue patients up and move from chair to chair with the prep and final cleanup done by techs. She took all the money she made and built medical office buildings. I had a dentist that seemed to...

Re: The cost-benefit of becoming a dentist/doctor
Lots of people hate going to the dentist and for me with my tiny mouth and rampant tooth-grinding its sheer misery. If I was a dentist I would woo clients by trying to make them comfortable and catering to their physical comfort and psychological well-being as well as their teeth. I would imagine a ...

Re: Relocation a Good Idea for me?
I live in DC metro. I would have the job in hand first and then evaluate. Everything is expensive here. You can't even go to Chinatown here for cheap food and goods because the Chinatown was taken over by expensive yuppie-serving stores. Also DC is crawling with 22 year olds from [insert prestigious...

Re: Do you count unrealized capital gains as part of your in
I agree there is uncertainty in thinking of unrealized cap gains as part of your net worth (which it is). However if you hold 100% in cash there is still uncertainty that whatever currency you hold in will lose value against whatever other currency or commodity. If your asset is clearly overvalued, ...

Re: Cheating the American medical system
If I was retired but didn't meet the eligibility for Medicare, I would try to meet state Medicaid expansion eligibility. Then I would go with an HSA (as I do now). The thought of paying the ACA tax is too repulsive for me, personally. I think I would try to move to Thailand before I did that.

Re: Coding Bootcamp???
If you only want to work somewhere prestigious, I think it's an issue in any field. You went to Harvard, they wanted Yale. Your father was a CEO and someone else's was a Senator, and they needed the political connection more. You are beautiful but someone else won Miss America. Whatever it is, they ...

I currently study at Treehouse, Code School, Codecademy and Coursera. After reading one of Bigato's previous posts I also started to solve problems at Code Wars (for example one basic problem there is the Fizz Buzz problem that the article discussed--I believe it's a rank 7 problem which is "wh...

Re: Ex-lawyer
Here's another ex-lawyer: I’m a former lawyer currently traveling (and eating!) my way around the world, one country at a time. This site began when I quit my job in 2008 and took off to see the world, having saved up money by lawyering for 5 years in New York City. I wanted to have a blog where I ...

Re: Freelance Direction
@ Chad - I completed all the tutorial lessons for those tracks in Codecademy but I haven't learned the languages, since I mainly followed the examples. Sometimes I wasn't sure what I was doing, mainly imitating. So now I'm trying to read more in depth. I guess it took a few weeks but I'm not working...

Re: Freelance Direction
I finished Javascript, Ruby and JQuery tracks on Codecademy. I feel that starting the other tracks right now would be like starting four or five foreign languages at the same time, so I'd rather try to deepen my knowledge of one or two. I'm currently doing the free two week trial at Team Treehouse a...
