Re: How to live in the moment?

I've found exercise and putting myself in new and disorienting situations to be generally helpful for this. I have also heard meditation can help too, though I've no experience with that.

Re: How to prepare for the next recession?

I'm surprised so many people seem to have recession-proof jobs. So far, advice seems to be: * Low spending * Recession-proof primary income stream or side hustle (or build up connections to acquire those if need be) * Cash position to benefit from falling stock prices * If a homeowner, prepare for p...

How to prepare for the next recession?

Were your laid off in '08-09? How did you fare it? What recommendations do you have for those still reliant on wages for preparing for and weathering the next economic downturn?

Re: From a financial perspective are high cost of living areas worth it?

The Frugalwoods hacked Boston for a number of years before retiring to their homestead in Vermont. I would go read the early parts of their blog to see how they did it -- its fairly detailed. I really enjoy the Frugalwoods blog, but just keep in mind they were dealing with significantly lower housi...

Re: From a financial perspective are high cost of living areas worth it?

If you're intent on completely ignoring qualitative factors, you should choose Rochester. The rent will be a third to a half of what you'd be paying for a comparable living arrangement in Boston. I imagine owning a car should cost less than the $500/month or whatever you'd be saving on rent (though ...

Would you give your kids money for college or life?

Inspired by dropoutretire's thread: http://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=8770 I've known parents that pay for their kid's college. Many stop at undergrad, some will pay all the way through very expensive grad school. Heck, even a few will give to their kids well beyond sc...

Re: Varieties of salt and cooking

We sometimes use sea salt and have been working through Himalayan salts gifted to us by BF's family. There's a minor but noticeable difference in taste. Less sharp.

Re: Why are men more violent

I doubt this to be the case. Increased obesity is highly correlated with decreased testosterone. This means men should be less violent the fatter we get. There are many risk factors to obesity-- poverty, food access, exercise-- that are also risk factors for aggression. I honestly don't know the st...

Re: A model of marriage

Men who don't quite know if they want children is not such a bad thing in my experience. Men who evade responsibility are. Those two things should not be confused. Fair enough. I personally consider it a point of responsibility to sort out those feelings before having a kid, before the decision is ...

Re: Why are men more violent

So how would that work? Societal expectations. From a very young age, many boys in our culture are told that "real men" like trucks and explosions and aggressive displays of dominance. They are also taught to suppress their emotions and that crying or talking about your feelings is effemi...

Re: A model of marriage

Clearly at least until your daughter is an adult. And ideally you'd be a continued force in her life beyond that. Not to prove to some random person on the internet, by the way, but because she deserves your full love and continued involvement as your daughter.

Re: A model of marriage

I find that to be such a boring and non-exculpatory stereotype. I know men who actively want children, I know men who actively don't. Either of those is fine. And not knowing one's preference is fine too, until they have children. I appreciate that biological mechanisms help to inspire parental invo...

Re: A model of marriage

I guess. This is outside the context of the marriage perhaps, but the thought of a child being raised almost twenty years by a parent who slightly resents them and only had them to keep their partner marginally happier is pretty depressing. I'm sure it happens, but it would seem a better outcome for...

Re: A model of marriage

I cannot fathom an individual so neutral on having/not having kids that it does not exceed their capitulation budget. Maybe it is just because I am very strongly on the wants-kids side of the spectrum, but are there really people out there who are like, "Babies? I mean if my wife wants them I g...

Re: "Skin Hunger" - is affection required for most people to feel fully nourished?

Children, particularly young infants and toddlers, that undergo touch deprivation often suffer from developmental delays. It's one of the primary ways humans show affection. I feel like it should go without saying that adults need touch too. One thing I wish is that people would take more seriously ...

Re: brute journal

If brute is content with life as he lives it now, then keep on keeping on. However, if brute ever does decide he is dissatisfied without meaning in his life, I have three pieces of advice: (1) Read Viktor Frankl's Man's Search For Meaning . A lot of it is about his time as a prisoner of a Nazi conce...

Re: brute journal

Clearly a nihilist, but is brute in crisis? We have established pretty well that brute doesn't seem to feel life in general and his life in particular have meaning. But, I think the question not yet answered and still ambiguous is this: Does brute want to feel like his life has meaning?

I'm sorry to hear about your breakup. I did not mean for my comment to be critical towards poly people or of your relationship in particular, though I can understand how it could be read that way. I think we're describing the same relationship dynamic from different perspectives. It is not your faul...

Re: Tinder, OKcupid, other sites? Polyamorous relationships?

I'm a serial monogamist so take my advice with a grain of salt. I met my boyfriend on OKC. Back when I was on it they had questions you would answer and they would compute a 1-100 score for you vs. potential matches. Personally speaking, I found their algorithm to be dead on. Clearly ymmv. +1 to all...

Re: Location vs Money

My vote is for Asia. Now all you're walking away from is a job offer. In a couple years after you've paid off your loans, you'll be walking away from a life. You'll have progressed in your career, be making more money, settled into your apartment, maybe met someone that you're dating. It'll be a lot...
