If we take the article at face value, economists are more likely to lie "for financial gain." I wonder which group is more likely to lie for, say, social gain.

I agree 110 percent. I do, however, think that various enjoyments can be learned (e.g., learning to appreciate a free walk in the park is a frugal learning, and young children are often indoctrinated to learn the joys of consumerism). So minus 10% leaves us in complete agreement.

That bike looks real good. One random guy on a forum said he was able to get a customer service rep to retroactively apply a 20% off coupon and free shipping on top of that. Too bad I already have a bike that I don't ride as much as I'd like, so I can't really justify this.

I honestly think service quality goes up once you get on their list of wealth management targets. They are more willing to waive a random fee if they think it'll keep you in their orbit.

I've been getting a $1 ticket for every state drawing. The payout is usually around $9 million, which is plenty for me :-) I too think it's worth the entertainment value, but still prefer a slightly higher EV when available.

I'm the opposite -- I'd definitely get the season pass to Disney.
On the other hand, I wouldn't go to Alcatraz or ride the cable car. Those drivers are surly and it's cold.

It could be reasonable. 7x income at 4% SWR implies expenses of 28% of income, and therefore a 72% savings rate. That means you can ERE in about 10 years.
