Sock longevity and darning

Hi all, I seem to be able to wear holes in the toes and heels of socks in a matter of months. My strategy to solve this problem is: A) Learn how to darn socks B) Buy better quality socks (that will have the side benefit of inspiring me to keep them in good condition and repaired when necessary). As ...

Re: 10 year old Prius or Accord?

I think those are pretty equivalent, so I would buy whichever one I could get a better deal on in terms of condition and cost. In fact, I would actually expand my search to other similar Toyotas and Hondas and Scions (which are actually Toyotas). No reason to fall in love with any particular model,...

10 year old Prius or Accord?

Hi, With my personal circumstances changing (baby on the way) I'm looking at getting a car. I want to optimise my car choice to maximise longevity and reliability while minimising cost. Although I cannot predict my future situation, having a car large enough for a pram and luggage and at least one c...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

It's been a long while. I feel like I'm stumbling bleary eyed back into the light and sanity of ERE after a long trip into the land of excess. I have kept a careful track of my finances throughout, and will be publishing the results shortly. They won't be good, as they include a number of large wedd...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

Thank you Egg. Appreciate the comments. As soon as my current mobile contract comes to an end, I'm going to move to PAYG. Yours certainly sounds like a good deal (especially as I often find myself running out of minutes and data with my current contract). You're spot on about my salary. I moved out ...

Re: plee's journal

Hi. Sounds like great progress already - especially on those loans. I'm in London, with very similar "fixed" expenses. Lowering transport costs is my current target. If you were to cycle, would you do the entire journey? How long would that be? I'm a little far out (north London outskirts) which is ...

Re: Egg's journal

Just read your journal from start to finish Egg, and a very enjoyable read it was. Congratulations on getting a place on the Civil Service Fast Stream. I've heard good things about it. I'm in London on a very similar salary to what you'll be starting on - and managing about 30-40% savings. Unfortuna...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

The need to reduce expenses much further has just been underlined by a request from my local council for a significant sum of money (we are talking tens of thousands) for repairs to the fabric of the building we live in. The house is owned by my partner. The repayment can be staggered over a number ...

Goals for December I'm going to attempt to frame my December goals according to the Balanced Scorecard lenses (inspired by C40's application of corporate tools to his ERE strategy). Financial Save 30% of income [a lower but realistic rate, considering Christmas] Full emphasis and energy on lifestyle...

Re: Warrior Diet and concentration/focus.

Thank you all for your replies. Dave: Yesterday, on your advice, I started the day with a smallish breakfast (reduced amount of porridge with ground flax seeds, a banana) and then ate again at lunch (celery, cucumber, carrot, tomato - and a bag of crisps). On this combination, certainly lighter than...

Warrior Diet and concentration/focus.

Hi all, Interested in the views of experienced Warrior Dieters on here, as I come to the end of Warrior Dieting Day 1. I'm your typical office dweeb, not expending a significant number of calories beyond the normal background metabolic burn. In the midst of a day of minimal food consumption, as part...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

Things have progressed well over the last week. I have achieved the following: 2 x very low cost shops from a budget supermarket, based almost entirely on fruit and veg, beans, and whole grains. I have cooked from scratch for every meal where I've been at home (not so easy at work, as I have to trav...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

It's been almost 6 month since I last posted. Looking at the longer-term goals I set out in that previous post, I'm struck by how little progress I've made against them. One personal "development area" (i..e massive failing) I've had since early childhood is my tendency to flit between interests - a...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

I'm disappointed in my rate of progress during April. To help me focus in more in May, I have set myself the following goals. I'm used to setting goals for myself, but also used to forgetting them/changing them along the way. I am outlining them here, in the hope that a degree of public scrutiny wil...

Re: Ginger1's Journal

I have run the expense report for April, but have yet to calculate the actual savings rate (the numbers are additionally complicated because of having work expenses to remove from the calculations). But I approach April's calculation with that general guilt of someone who knows he hasn't quite done ...

Ydobon: I can do it in 25 minutes on the overground - followed by a 40 minute walk. I can use the train part for reading/language learning and then enjoy a leisurely walk to the office. I quite enjoy it.
