Re: Obtaining a Second Passport

I don't disagree, but the cost/benefit calculation for the EU is changing very quickly. When we were in Lviv in 2019 I went to the National Archives, researched my family history and now possess official documents that show my great-grandmother's and great-grandfather's birth. If they ever decide t...

Re: Children and troubles ahead...

I vaguely recall a thread more directly relevant to my question but couldn't find it with some search attempts. Are there any board games recommended for teaching 6-8 y.o. kids good personal finance (FIRE) practices? I have done some reading online and: 1. Kiyosaki's Cashflow for Kids drives home th...

Re: Grocery Bill: The Most Difficult Thing to Give Up.

Well the set above is pretty representative. Swap salmon for soft cheese or eggs sometimes (a bit less healthy but cheaper and even I wouldn't eat salmon every day), and the vegetable types vary, but other than that it's my normal diet for a day.

Re: Alice_AU journal

Given how weak AUD currently has been (0.67 USD currently), Australia is hardly the best place to earn anymore. In most high paying fields you can get paid significantly more in the US, and taxes are higher in Australia. On the other hand, Australia has decent free healthcare, decent public schools ...

Re: Grocery Bill: The Most Difficult Thing to Give Up.

@NPV - I’m with FIRE 2018. First try to source what you want to eat less expensively. Different markets, especially fresh fish wholesale markets are great sources for salmon. Not sure where you live but I routinely get salmon for about 1/2 the price in a supermarket by shopping in bulk at the fish ...

Re: Grocery Bill: The Most Difficult Thing to Give Up.

A lot of this will vary based off your approach to nutrition (i.e. someone following organic Paleo simply cannot compete on cost with a non-organic whole food plant based eater) This is a difficult one for me. My paleo-ish pescatarian-ish keto-ish diet seems just structurally very expensive. Fatty ...

I thought this article on solo polyamory was insightful: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog ... ingle-poly
I was not familiar with the concept of solo poly before and it describes me so well.

Thanks Sclass for sharing! 13 years of profits on autopilot is impressive longevity (and for a few afternoons' work!). What do you think enabled this longevity? Have you considered / tried building more businesses with a similar model and different content? Regarding your point on tough criteria... ...

Side business experience

Hi all, Upon losing a fair bit of money over the last couple months I have been reflecting on various income stream options to speed up path to ERE. Now of course the lines between an investment, a business and a job as well as the definition of "side" are blurry. For the purposes of this ...

Best browser extension to automatically suggest better prices for products online?

There seems to be a lot of different browser extensions to help save when shopping online: https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/shopping/browser-extensions-online-shopping/ I already use one to automatically find and apply coupons (Honey) which saves me a few bucks here and there - not sure if it is any ...

Re: FIRE reaching Critical Mass

I think people are a bit harsh on MMM, he spends ~25k on two adults and one child, putting his per capita spending between 12.5k and 8k depending on how you treat children in the per capita part. There's not a legion of people even on these forums who beat that easily. This is a very good point. Ki...

Re: "Why Growth Can't be Green" -- Article

While it's true that we are no longer worrying about whale blubber and wild fauna as a source of calories, it begs the question, what will be left to burn when the oil runs out? If civilisation is a heat engine, bound by the laws of thermodynamics, it's also a function of entropy, it needs to burn ...

yes, singapore definitely has the edge all else being equal, unless opening an account is complicated. Since I will probably move to HK it would be cool to have an account in Singapore (plus one in HK), but if Singapore is a nightmare I may just settle with an HK account For both HK and Singapore o...

Re: Should I Buy This Expensive Exercise Device?

Depends on how sure you are you will keep using it. I would say if you: 1. Have done deadlifts for years consistently and regularly and are sure you will continue this in the future, and 2. Have used a trap bar at least several times and strongly prefer it over an olympic bar Then go for it. If, how...

Re: World Income Distribution

This seems to be a reasonable way to think about global income distribution: Level 1: This is extreme poverty, with people living on less than $2 a day. Level 2: About 3 billion are in this category, surviving on between $2 and $8 a day. Level 3: In this category, people live on between $8 and $32 a...

Re: Fear of commitment. What to do?

Ideas like becoming an electrician, joining the military, doing grad school.. all requiring quite a bit of commitment If that is the barrier (ideas requiring more commitment than you are willing to give), one strategy to overcome it could be to devise ways to test them in very 80/20 (Pareto) ways. ...

Re: Fear of commitment. What to do?

You don't have to commit to anything in perpetuity. But you do need to just start doing stuff. For me this became most clear through two interconnected (and obvious) facts: 1. If you don't actually take actions to test and implement the idea, there is no result from it 2. If you don't actually take ...
