Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

Maybe I’ll just payoff my parent’s nice house at 130k and live here indefinitely. I bet you its now worth 500k. Take that 2023 reality.

It is a kick in the teeth to get the exact thing you've been working toward for more than a decade only to discover that the new reality is not what you expected.
The new reality sucks :’c

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

@theanimal, I think in showing the reasons why an idea doesn't work from multiple angles, this forum is discouraging and ultimately not useful. It'd take a very rare and assertive person to even continue an idea after having it torn down so comprehensively; I'd rather just research and try the idea ...

Typically signifies IQ, because if they were high IQ & work ethic, they'd be more likely to pick up English after a few years: 110 – Foremen, clerks, telephone operators, salesmen, policemen, electricians. 100 plus – Machine operators, shopkeepers, butchers, welders, sheet metal Workers. Below 1...

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

Ppl used to build houses together all the time, the Amish still do. Not one of them could build a race car, as the skills, tools, and constraints are way more niche. You'd need CAD for every little piece as well as an entire team putting the thousands of pieces together and making sure each piece wo...

I mean, I'd just do the same stuff I do now: learn natural languages, learn scripting languages, learn math, learn trade skills, go on hikes and road trips, visit historical places, etc. Mostly with myself or a gf. TBH there isn't much of a difference b/w living with the parents or owning my own hou...

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

Makes sense, though if a homeowner wants to do work on their own house, they probably won't even tell the city, thereby defeating the law. Sounds to me like high-iq ppl suffering on behalf of the low-iq ppl. Perhaps an exception should be made that a homeowner can work on their house, as long as the...

Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

Probably just bounce around city to city a la digital nomad or RV-life, and buy a house in the western-state equivalent of Europe. :p The goal of buying a house doesn't just happen magically, otherwise we'd all have one at 25. Requires getting a high-paid skill or trade for years, keeping a job for ...

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

I don't mind regulation, like don't make noise after 10 PM. Cool. Make your building up to fire code. Cool. Don't shoot, steal, or philander your neighbors. Great. Requiring that only contractors can work/approve work on your house, or that you can't do your own car repairs on your own driveway? Una...

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

@sky, that's not as intimidating an idea, it's essentially saying "someone else not me do the driveway, grading, foundation, framing, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing." Then I re-do everything else as needed/desired (flooring, roofing, siding, insulation, sheet rock, trim, paint, cabinetry, ...

Re: Good set of home power tools?

OK, I see your arguments, wired + extension cord makes the most sense for the most of the power tools; they'll last much longer too as they're not dependent on the manufacturing of a fitting battery. I doubt tool companies are like Honda or Toyota, where they still make parts for a product from the ...

HTML file + PHP file + CSS file + JavaScript file + SQL relational database (like PostgreSQL), on Visual Studio Code. If you wanna get fancy, React.JS. Spend 6 months to a year figuring that all out via TeamTreeHouse.com.

If you don't wanna learn any of that, Wordpress or Square.

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

Interesting, you think small western city jurisdictions would require licensed contractors for that (like Grand Junction, CO, or Montrose, CO)? I guess that's why you can't build in blue cities, especially big ones -- they'll regulate the hell out of your build (beyond just regular safety inspection...

Re: Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

Can't I just get the regulatory ppl to come take a look routinely, just like the contractors do it? Contractors aren't the brightest if you've interacted with any of them, I'm sure I can figure it out w/ research & YT, just like I did with complex car mechanics (where ppl also told me I couldn't...

Re: Good set of home power tools?

@sky, that makes sense, sounds like I may need to get the tools I want individually rather than as a set

So can you list each tool type you'd recommend to get wired or non-wired? (for example, is your angle grinder and sander wired)

Follow-Up to $250K USA house --> How to Build a House?

I got my first paycheck! $5800 - ($5800 * .0765 FICA) = $5,357 for May. No state taxes, and minimal federal tax for the year. So, to buy a used 250K house in a small western city, that's $250,000 / $5,357 = 46 months, or 3.9 years of work. More like 4.5 years cause of federal income taxes. -------- ...
