Re: Lonely

I understand how you feel. I am asexual and a romantic, so I'm never shacked up. I try to make good friendships with a small amount of people though, so I can get more human interaction. I just moved to where I am for a new job, and luckily made two new friends; one has become a really good friend. ...

Re: Emotional Intelligence

My friend's a neuroscientist, actually she has an MD and a PHD, so I've read and heard a lot about it, and Kurzweil doesn't guide Transhumanism; it's always revised and changing.

I'll check out the comparison though, its been awhile since I've read the two.

Re: Emotional Intelligence

I think you may find frustration when you start to spend more energy, trying to convince people to be interested in your interests. I think you will find more happiness getting your own path worked out, and leading by example, than by herding cats. But, maybe herding cats is your interest/fascinati...

Re: Emotional Intelligence

@Dragline Certainly. That's the driving force of our legal system for some people; to blame others and get recompense for it. I remember my literary teacher in high school telling me A Brave New World was the sequel to 1984 (or maybe the other way around). Never heard of the book, but I'll check the...

Emotional Intelligence

I'm going to go against the general grain here and state that I actually think people are smart; it's the sophisticated social indoctrination to the benefit of the ruling class that's tripping humanity up at this point in the game in my opinion. I'm starting to think that if we could get a grass roo...

Re: The Other America

A key element is to look at this from an urban planning and transportation perspective, and HUD. The urban poor, whether Caucasian or of immediate African descent, are literally closer to better jobs than the rural poor, and their are rural poor people of immediate African descent, and other ethnic ...

Re: My day off

I was a B student (an A student if you weighted my grades on the expanded GPA scale). I was involved in a crap ton of extra-curriculars and never cared about my grades. Many of my A student counterparts would scheme ways to keep their A's, but gaming the system was never interesting to me. I lived f...

Re: Alcohol moderation

When I was a kid, I saw a scientist on PBS say he didn't drink or do drugs because he never wanted to be unaware of his surroundings, or reality. That pretty much stuck with me. Now I have a health reason of why I don't do drugs, but that main reason still holds true.

Analog or Digital?

My landlord just left after fixing my washing machine. We got to talking about the analog versus digital washing machines. Mine somehow got stuck in a phase, and he luckily, somehow fixed it, but were lamenting the good ol' days when you could just skip cycles and troubleshoot easily. Do you all hav...

Re: The Other America

Many species have to migrate when their food source is low, or when the weather changes, so I don't see anything wrong with people having to migrate when communities are failing. I work in urban planning and transportation engineering, and sometimes communities do not want to do what it takes to sta...

Re: America’s Best Days May Be Behind It

From a transportation engineering and urban planning perspective (my job), we keep maintaining/building roads because freight is very hard on roads. Trucks ruin roads, and private companies do not compensate departments of transportation for the damage they do, other than paying fuel taxes, so citiz...

Re: what's your end of life strategy?

I think about it every now and then, probably more so than people of my age, as I am asexual and aromantic, and plan to live alone in my later years. I'm a transhumanist, so I think we'll reach the age where robots will actually be quite useful in my lifetime, so hopefully I can get one that will ac...

Re: The Other America

Interesting take on Trump followers. I don't know many personally, to be honest, I mostly have friends of varying cultures, and since Trump has essentially insulted all of them, they're definitely not inclined to his ideals. The few Trump followers I know, are parents of friends, and do tend to lean...

The Other America

Has anyone read the Hillbilly Elegy yet? The Georgia library system just allowed users to reserve it, and it will be at my local library in a week or so. I can't wait to read it, as it presents a perspective that I only know about through friends and colleagues who grew up similar to the book; a par...

Re: My day off

I only get two weeks leave here the first year of working. I can't take any of it until I've worked for 6 months, so I can't take any days off until February. I got sick and took one day off and was yelled at, and cautioned not to get sick again. Consequently, I'm interviewing for other jobs. At my ...

Re: Motivation to retire early

My motivation to retire early is that I hate being in the workforce. I'm trying to alleviate that by negotiating with my employer to work less days, and use flex time, but they don't want to. I want to enjoy more days to myself, while I'm still young. I'll retire in either 6 or 11 years; when I'm ar...

Re: Resources and recommend watching

I've just finished the second episode of Black Mirror, and I am very satisfied with the the series so far. Although it completely gives up on humanity and society- from what I've seen, it's great commentary on them. The second episode is how I feel about the modern day workforce. Maybe I'd have a be...
