Re: Third World ERE - FI Achieved!

A bit of an understatement. However, with your passive income hitting 107% of expenses, you can afford to be a full-time creative. I wish you the best. Thank you. I've done a decent job of diversifying, receiving income from Smashwords, Valve, and various game stores, but having a stable fallback i...

Re: Third World ERE - FI Achieved!

FINAL POST Hello, everyone. One last post to cap off this thread. I'm now FI by just about any standard, as my passive income in 2019 was 107% of my expenses. That's without outside benefits (like my previous subsidized housing) and including several "abnormal" expenses that won't repeat y...

Re: Third World ERE

Thank you, and thanks for commenting. I'm not absolutely ruling out updating any more, so I might spend some more time here yet.

Re: Third World ERE

2017 Update This may be my last update for a variety of reasons. Two of my goals have essentially flipped. Originally I was thinking FI would let me free up my time for creative pursuits, but now my creative work is what's paving the road to FI. I made more money writing in 2016 than I ever did as ...

Re: Class action law suits --- It's the American way

Anyone know if you can be up for costs participating in those things if they lose ? I was under the impression you weren't, but would anyone like to correct me? @Ian: a lot of times you won't know if it's really worth it until after the fact; payouts tend to be distributed pro rata. For example, I'...

Re: Class action law suits --- It's the American way

Sorry to gravedig, but I just got a notification of one of these and thought of this thread. I was ready to read through all the terms, but the documents I received seem very short on the details and looking it up hasn't produced many meaningful results. Can anyone point me in the right direction fo...

Re: Finding an apartment in an unfamiliar city

That's definitely not something I'd considered, thanks. I've looked through their site some, but I'm not sure they have much for non-military people.

Re: Finding an apartment in an unfamiliar city

Thank you all for the feedback. Responses to a few things: Also, try to find a local person. What city are you looking at? Albuquerque, though I'm not likely to be too restricted by location. I'm open to considering other areas in NM that meet my criteria, such as CoL and rent. If anyone here has pe...

Finding an apartment in an unfamiliar city

What things should be taken into account when moving across the country to a new city? There may also be some "first time renter" questions here, since I've never rented an apartment in the US before and Tanzania is a very different rental environment. I figure there must be conventional w...

Re: Third World ERE

2016 Update So, I have a new status quo. I decided not to take the job in Saudi Arabia or anywhere else: I'm living off of creative income for now. I'm fairly close to family, however, so my living costs are a little lower than they would be normally. How long I'll stay in this situation, I can't b...

Re: Third World ERE

2015 Update #2 Time for another snapshot update, since this is another potential turning point. I finished my job as planned and I'm now in my interim situation. I'm not sure how long I want to stay here, but it's a good option while I watch my creative income to see how it will hold up long term. ...

Re: Third World ERE

Would living in Saudi Arabia limit your writing? Does the government limit access or content or subject matter at all for expats? I have no idea -- just wondering. This was one of my primary concerns, but a teacher currently working there says they have unlimited internet access. Not that my opinio...

Re: Third World ERE

2015 Update #1 I thought I was going to end up updating this yearly, but it looks like I'm here for a mid-year update. It could be interesting to get a snapshot of the situation now, because by the end of the year I'll have significantly more perspective on a number of issues. Expense-wise, there's...

Re: Would you play an ERE computer game? (GREENLIT)

I forget which statue is which, but they are destroyed by: opening the empty chest (NW), pulling the switch (E), pulling the lever (E), and defeating the secret boss (N).

As for the crashes, I'll try to duplicate them.

Re: Would you play an ERE computer game? (GREENLIT)

It took a long time, but eventually we worked our way into the top ten games on Steam Greenlight, at which point it was accepted by Valve, and now the game is released on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/349500/ If you enjoyed the game and have a Steam account, I'd much appreciate if you lef...

Re: Third World ERE

It's unsurprising that I've let this thread lapse, since I've never been much of a journaling person. I don't like abandoning things completely, however, and I don't want to leave the impression that this financial lifestyle can't work. So I'll be back for occasional updates. Looking back over 2014,...

Congratulations on your good start. I don't usually celebrate since I know some people struggle with the goal, so let me just say I won NaNo fairly early in the month.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2014

Best of luck, Jenny.

I had quite a successful month. I could actually sustain this level of writing for a longer period, but I don't have enough notes prepared to write that much without getting ahead of myself (and I find that to be extremely unproductive).

Well, this thread went quiet. The month is almost done and I know at least two of us are well over the goal - how did everyone else do? Anyone trying a big push to finish at the end?
