Re: Obtaining a Second Passport

One could also convert to Judaism or prove Jewish ancestry (a Jewish grandparent would suffice) to acquire Israeli citizenship. I thought you need atleast your mother ('s side) to be a Jew in order to claim Jewish ancestry. That is indeed the case according to Jewish law. But Israeli law extends th...

Re: Some questions for the already financial independent

• What motivated you to want to retire early? For me it was the combination of an unsatisfying career and reaching age 30 (one third-life-crisis) • How old were you when you early retired and how many years did you have to work for it? I found ERE in 2013. I was 29 at the time. I didn't really "work...

Re: Elegant's journal

ugh, re-reading what I wrote I sound extremely bitter and make things worse than what they really are. ;) @Jacob three years ago you wrote in reply to (similiar) concerns I raised in this very thread: "Warning: Quitting or retiring won't automatically solve the "existentialist problem". It might act...

Re: Elegant's journal

First semester is behind me. I feel I need to express my thoughts, I'm sorry if this somewhat harsh or inappropriate. I hate to say it but law school is not as intellectually stimulating as I thought it would be. I now feel it is mostly a waste of time with massive workload. I hardly derive any insp...

Re: Elegant's journal

So I rented out the apartment for a sum equivalent to 1,000$ per month. With my tiny business venture, my total monthly passive income now stands at 1,500$ per month. That means that post ERE, I make almost 1/2 of what I made pre-ERE. Even a minimum wage burger flipping job would put me at my pre-ER...

Re: Elegant's journal

May 2015 Update. It's now more than 7 months since I ere'd. Time is not slowing down . Surprise surprise. Although I don't miss my old job in the slightest, I cannot recall doing anything truly significant since retiring. The biggest news is that I practically moved in to live with my mother. She is...

Re: Should I go to law school in a big city?

I ERE'd six months ago at the age of 30 and am about to start Law school in October here in Israel. I'm mainly doing this because after years of cerebral degeneration I feel like school could help me fire up my hibernating brain and consequentially slow down my perception of time, which I find as im...

Losing your FI status to the market

I'm worried about this recent pullback. I believe it is driven by, and could get much worse as a result of, massive black swans including Russian adventurism and the manipulation of oil prices (here used as a weapon of mass financial destruction). My risk tolerance is very low so I'm only 50% in equ...

Re: How do ERE men attract women?

OP - I've struggled with this issue myself. I hate to say that eventually I just gave up on women. I don't understand them, let alone able to attract them. Trying to do so caused me a lot of stress. By avoiding females I've been able to reduce that and now it is no longer an issue.

I've shamefully neglected this thread since I've retired! Hopefully my stash will...

Re: Elegant's journal

I quit my job today, a day after I turned 30. For the first time in 30 years I no longer have an "institution" to tell me what to do, where to be, or how to act. My time is *MINE*. I am now officially FIRE (that is, unless I find a new job that I LIKE for a change ;) ) I would have never made this h...

@Iwantless Thanks for reading. Yeah, I'm not really sure what to expect. There is some significance wrt retiring ...

Re: Elegant's journal

September 2014 update: September is over, and thus begins my last month as a wage-slave. By the end of October, just as I turn 30 years old, I'm going to be a free man. I stopped seeing the shrink. I got the confirmation I wanted and felt there was no use in further couch ramblings. I am willing to...

The alternative solution/outcome is business as usual. This means increasing military costs (to compensate for the asymmetric attacks) which fall on the taxpayers and ultimately the productivity of the country. However, people will slowly get used to terrorism and start thinking of it as a hassle r...

August 2014 update: * After much consideration I started seeing a psychologist. I wanted an unbiased professional to take a look at things and give me an analysis of my ERE related decisions. Speaking my mind was nice, for a change. Felt like Tony Soprano. * After 3 meetings I told her about ERE an...

With globalization, it is getting harder to find uncorrelated assets.
But correlations change over time. And, given the current Russia/Europe strife, it seems that de-globalization is not completely out of the question.

Re: Are you risk averse? Why??

29 years old. Current net worth is 240k USD. Maximum projected annual expense is estimated to be 8500 USD (Likelier scenario is 6,000 USD). I limit my exposure to stocks to 50%. The rest of my stash is in cash and bonds. Am I able to take more risk given my age? Of course. Do I need to take more ris...
