Re: Beware of cheap Android phones.

Would you trust a device like this? They put a lot of R&D into a product that people would maybe like. I would think there is processing done in the glasses when you see terms like AI voice control and tracking/detection sensors in the specs. But it may be low level processing that maybe is conf...

Re: Beware of cheap Android phones.

I wouldn't think so. However I would assume it is theoretically possible for a plug and play device to be able to inject code to the connected device. Not very likely. I do not think there is on board data storage or power with these glasses. It just connect with an OTG display port usb c and draws ...

I realize my response (maybe all my responses) went off the rails. Apologies to all, in particular, @THF. I just think you are in the door based on what you already brought to the table. Build on that,. You don't have to know it day one (unless you said you had said skills LOL) To me there is no nee...

Re: Beware of cheap Android phones.

This kind of got me worried. I purchased a pair of AR glasses from a Chinese manufacturer (Rokid). The glasses interface with your phone/computer but really mirror your device display (so it is not true AR). Am I paranoid? I could see something lurking in them but maybe it is just an i/o peripheral....

Re: For coders, are these 100% online, accredited programs any good?

When my son interviewed for his job, the scrutiny on his degrees was about a sentence or two. “What classes did you take?” “Oh that’s interesting”. Then the interview went on to knowledge based questions, “how would you approach this?” questions and what specific projects did you work on. He is now ...

Re: For coders, are these 100% online, accredited programs any good?

THF, Numerous people here are telling you that you don’t need a CS degree. It seems like you are hell bent on “you doing you”. Believe them. You probably are at or over 30 based on when you joined this forum. My son got his dual BA degrees at Boulder (CS/Math) in 4 years. It worked out for him. But ...

Re: Just for fun: What is the oldest thing you own that you use daily?

I have a snooker table circa 1945 in the basement that I use daily. I also have various slide rules that I fiddle with. Some date into the 40s and 50s.

Re: Trade unions

Interesting discussion. I was never in a union but I was able to see unions in action and in general can see positives as well as negatives associated with them. I can see why some people don’t like unions. There definitely are excesses and fat cats. (Richard Trumka was born in the same town as my g...

Re: Solar power

I have panels. Truthfully I would have to do a deep dive analysis on whether solar panels are really worth it. I would note I also have had EVs for the last 7 years at this point. My system is grid tied with no battery backup. I bought the system last year (8500 kw) thru SunRun. I went with SunRun b...

I would second FFJ to get an occasional gig job. Not for the money, but for emotional and psychological reasons. I have read your journal for as long as you have been here and it is obvious the engineer/worrier in you is heavily ingrained and will never be resolved even with therapy. You have done a...

I used to be into homebrewing back in the day. At the time I was working in Boulder and our office happened to be in the same office building as the American Home Brewers Assn. Every once in a while you would see Charlie Papazian walking around, who was the homebrewing deity president and author of ...

Followup to last week: The kids spent the better part of a week clearing out stuff. Yes, more stuff migrated over and yes, a storage unit was procured to allow time to decide. Eventually, I hope it empties out but who knows? The entire house is infested with mice. Mouse turds everywhere. They acted ...

Re: Older parents and living arrangements

I posted to this thread last fall regarding my mom. My mom is still doing pretty well. Our latest issue is my in-laws. My father in law had a stroke a few years back. My mother in law, who is fiercely independent and headstrong, needed to take care of him. He is 87 and she is 89. She has in the last...

Re: Older parents and living arrangements

My mom is in her mid 80s and has been widowed for about 4 years. I am her only child. She owns a house on the southeast coast. She lives in a Fifty-five and older community in her own house. I live in denver. I generally only see her twice a year but I call her 5-6 times a week. I am on her bank acc...

Re: Dividends over 4% rule

I own a lot of the crappy value trap stuff that Jacob was talking about. (T/VZ/MO/BTI/Utilities/NLY). While it is true these companies don’t really grow they are a cash machine - until they aren’t. I balance this out by taking risk with positions in growth stocks (NIO in a $4, PLTR in at $15) At thi...

Re: Dividends over 4% rule

Obviously the 4% rule is about depleting a balanced 50/50 stock/bonds portfolio and probably is no longer applicable anyway. It is not about what you want to earn in a stock dividend or even a total return on a dividend growth stock which damn well better be more than 4%... It also assumes you are l...
