Re: You Don't Need Health Insurance

@Scott2- What I'm getting at, and what @Ego put more succinctly, is that what you described above is treatment. Healthcare excels at treatment. A personal health strategy, by way of exercise, diet etc., is a form of prevention that lessens or eliminates the need for such treatment. An example of pre...

I like her answer on how to be more charismatic: read some books, watch a bunch of footage of charismatic people, and then practice. I read the book "The Charisma Myth" a few years ago. The author suggested some physical tactics in addition to what you mentioned above. Specifically, learn...

I'm sorry you're feeling poorly, That's an unenviable position to be in and can be overwhelming when you feel that everything is hopeless. We only have your posts to go off of, so we don't have the full picture. But from what you write here, it seems like it could be beneficial to go through somethi...

Re: You Don't Need Health Insurance

Some of this cost is because I'm transitioning from the article's paradigm. I erroneously neglected healthcare, raising many varieties of resistance. It was to my detriment, and I'm now playing catch-up. I think this is where our disagreement lies. I don't see the author as neglecting any care. She...

Re: You Don't Need Health Insurance

At some point it's smart to leverage outside expertise. Ideally you regularly consult with a team of trusted advisors. Doing that well is not easy, especially absent guide rails. IMO it doesn't start with a Groupon search. Isn't that just a general issue? How many people here trust the state of the...

Re: You Don't Need Health Insurance

To be clear, the author of the post is not advocating for neglecting your health or avoiding payment of any bills. There are responsible ways to go about this (as the author is advocating) and there are other ways as illustrated above. Coming from the UK I'm not sure I understand the US system. Isn'...

How to Be More Agentic

How to Be More Agentic A really useful post where the author discusses her strategies for cultivating agency in her life. She sees the following 6 categories as the best ways to go about doing so: Court Rejection - Ask for things and for things that seem unreasonable. You should be getting more rej...

You Don't Need Health Insurance

You Don't Need Health Insurance The post discusses the author's experience going without healthcare. Her method boils down to shopping around via price on the everyday things like glasses and dentists, and then negotiating later on for emergency items. She says that for her, going without insurance...

FWIW, We use DIY detergent as well, including for cleaning cloth diapers and it's effective at cleaning those. Mrs. Animal made the last batch for ~$3 last year. It's well over 300 loads worth.

On 4.5" tires I've gotten up to 13 mph at a sprint on concrete. 8-) The record holders on the nearby 100 mile winter race in the mountains are at a little over 8 hours, so roughly 12-13 mph constant pace. That's on snow, so a bit slower than it would be on a gravel road, but still, 6-8 mph as a...

Nate Hagens had Jane Munck on his podcast recently. She studies environmental toxicology and is a director at the Food Packaging Forum Foundation. They talked about much of the above and more related to the dangers of plastic and food. Here's a link to the episode and transcript A few things that st...

@theanimal- I'm guessing you know more about processing and storing meat than most here. Is smoking or drying the meat realistic at the quantities you are considering? It's possible, it's the traditional way in Alaska and elsewhere for that matter. Freezers and plastic became widely used about the ...

Re: 7Wannabe5-Take9-One Ordinary Day, With Peanuts

Strength training is hugely protective for women as they age, but using metrics designed for young men can be discouraging. In another study, a trainer worked with a group of women for three months training them towards doing a pull-up, and none of them were able to do one by the end of the period....

@slevin, these kinds of comments about Tesla remind me of 2007 when the iPhone was released, and people complained about the buggy OS, expensive price, and insisted that a touchscreen would never replace the physical buttons of their BlackBerry, etc. True. I see the difference in that Tesla has bee...

Re: (Theory of) Minimum "Hotbed" ??

I'm no engineer, but I see what could be a couple of major flaws with the assumptions. Regarding number 1- it doesn't make sense to me why the air temperature would be the same as the boiling water. Presumably, the ambient air temperature is slightly higher than the outside temperature and rises aft...

You can do it, but it'll be up to you how much extra hassle you want to deal with. The bible on this stuff is "Extreme Privacy:What It Takes To Disappear" by Michael Bazzell. It's updated regularly and includes tactics for tech use if you are going to use it. I'd written out the above and ...

Yes, massage therapy seems like a good example of a microbusiness, especially if you live in a tourist destination. The ROI is kind of crazy. The course is $4100 and presuming she is able to pass the certifying exam to get her license, she will be able to charge the market rate of ~$100/hr right awa...
