Re: Who'd a thunk it? Obamacare not repealed

As of now, the only carrier offering a plan on the exchange in my area has announced that they won't do so next year. Not sure what I will do. Be sure to look at the insurance providers off the exchange to see what they offer. You won't get subsidies, but you'll likely get a lot more options. Perso...

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

I don't have kids, so I never felt the biological urge to nurture a child at all costs. So depending on your mood you can take my opinion either with a grain of salt as someone who doesn't get it, or as the view of a neutral outsider. ;) My parents provided me an old pickup truck my senior year in h...

I'm still not convinced it isn't just a cheap way to get attention. Flat earth talk is kindof a fad lately.

Re: Portfolio Charts

@T9000- have you done an article about rebalancing? How, when, etc, and theories about that wrt allocations? Not yet, but that's a good idea. I looked at it briefly a while back before realizing I'd need to update my calculation method to study other rebalancing strategies. I ended up punting and m...

@Ego -- I'm not sure others find the same meaning in tying everything back to politics. ;) I don't share your skepticism of faith, but I also think there are simple steps one can take to appreciate day-to-day meaning that do not require belief in a divine creator. It's more about being mindful of re...

But I still think you should just get a dog. :) I think there's something to that. Once you discover that debating the meaning of life is perhaps one of the least fulfilling activities one can undertake, find a friend who is happiest when you simply choose to close the laptop. https://www.youtube.c...

Re: A Twitter employee making $160,000 a year says he's only scraping by in San Francisco

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that I think he's truly a victim with no choice but to live paycheck to paycheck. I'm guessing some combination of private schooling and entertainment budget (eating out every meal is not uncommon) is a significant contributor. But the article is typical of the genre tha...

Re: A Twitter employee making $160,000 a year says he's only scraping by in San Francisco

When the median rent is $50k a year and the taxes on a salary that size are another $50k, it's easy to see how things can get out of hand very quickly. Two-thirds of your money is already gone even before the typical consumer spending kicks in. I still consider it clickbait that obscures deeper issu...

Re: MMM interviewed by Tim Ferriss (ERE mentioned)

What distinguishes ERE from all the rest is not spending level, but its incorporation of the Renaissance concept. +1. Personally, I relate a little more to MMM on the spending level but to Jacob on the overall systems mindset. I see them as two important voices in the FIRE community and think a wor...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Leveraged or not, the max drawdown figured you have stated are wrong and misleading. A portfolio with a better worst year (December to December) performance may have a much worse max DD. Please clarify this on your site. Just so we're speaking the same language (and for the benefit of others follow...

@banker22 : The goal of the site is to provide relative portfolio comparisons for everyday buy and hold investors, and I've found that the daily data you're looking for is overkill for most asset allocation discussions. That said, I appreciate your point especially with regard to drawdown numbers an...

Re: How to deal with artists and "intuitives"?

FWIW, your concern about others disliking the explicit chain of affirmative consent for things like putting your arm around somebody has nothing to do with intuitive personalities. That's a cultural thing very isolated to certain ages and geographies, and honestly you're probably going to find that ...

So, would vanguards VSIAX perform more like Mid Cap Value or Small Cap Value on your calculators? Or a (50/50?) mix of the two? Or something else entirely? If so, how would Vanguard's Mid Cap funds compare to the Mid Cap performance on your calculators? In general the calculators use Vanguard index...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Yeah, industry size definitions vary a lot more than you think and the numbers in the asset summaries are only approximate. For reference, Vanguard uses CRSP data which defines small caps as the 85th percentile to the 98th percentile of the total market when sorted by valuation. Obviously, the preci...

Re: Opinions on current investment landscape?

Hi PhotoJ89. Welcome! Here are my first impressions: The thing is, I have no investment plan. I haven't been able to bring myself to put money into index funds. I'd be happy to move 50+% of my NW into index funds after we see a ~50% crash in stocks. My belief is that any gains made between now and t...

The risk is stocks underperforming, which Tyler just illustrated is more common than I gave it credit for. BUT, isn't that stocks lower bound just another repeating worst year? The opposite of 1999? Yep -- that's true. Think of the highest and lowest points as the fat tails in the returns distribut...

But I also see that the maximum of those other portfolios corresponds closely with other TSM peaks. Doesn't that indicate that stocks are the primary driver of returns? Stocks are definitely an important part of any portfolio, but correlated peaks likely speak more to similar portfolio construction...

Re: Portfolio Charts

A few things: 1) The larger point of both articles is that there's more to accumulation planning than simply maximizing desired returns without regard to tradeoffs. Putting all of your money in a TSM fund is not particularly dependable, efficient, or sustainable for most investors, and that makes pl...
