Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
@AH - I really like the title of that post. I presume it's well-known, at least on the forum, that I'm not a fan of current trend towards pathologizing anyone who falls outside an increasingly narrow normative mainstream range, where the choice seems to be between average/norm or somehow sick. I'm a...

Re: Positive and negative goals in a WOG
I read somewhere that Rationals tend to visualize their life linearly. Creating a WOG (collection of vectors) is just doing an extremely good job of visualizing/projecting your life linearly. The WOG method is just a way to get people out of the "optimized box"-thinking that dominates WL4...

Re: Positive and negative goals in a WOG
@AE - You got it! It's basically a sense-making exercise for the meta-game. This becomes obvious in retrospect after understanding the language. The [new] language is exactly what makes it possible to make sense of it. [Language is basically a tool for that. It is not the only tool, but that's anoth...

Re: Positive and negative goals in a WOG
But I had a question about if the goals you envision while doing things are positive or negative goals. Specifically, something like "save money" might be seen as a negative goal (you are avoiding a negative/loss aversion) whereas "make money" is a positive goal (adding somethin...

Re: Gaming/virtual economies (EVE online)
As a former pro gamer who has played tournaments of all sorts for a multitude of games. Were the games all within the same category, e.g. FPS, or did you play different categories too, e.g. FPS and RTS? Did you find that the skills/talents transferred between games such as game equivalent of IQ for...

Many or most humans would also imbue the word "home" with emotional, psychological and relationship connotations. As in "home" is the place where I feel safe. "Home" is the place where I can be myself. "Home" is where the heart is. They would use the word &qu...

Re: M, 26, best practices: land inheritance, should I sell, hold, do a new build or buy an existing house?
Humans who are primarily interested in Achievement (Wealth is a form of Achievement) are likely to avoid both the lowest risk (dull, low pay-off)and the highest risk opportunities. Since the highest risk opportunities are well associated with Creativity, there is a fairly clear trade-off between Ac...

What is the right perspective? I don't think there's a right way, but there are in my opinion a bunch of wrong ways. Ownership is just a matter of degree. Even if you "own" the home, the government still wants you to pay taxes which is a form of rent (real estate taxes = royal estate rent...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
-The nomadic lifestyle and immersing oneself in strange new environments every couple of weeks takes up a large portion of my cognitive bandwidth. I felt a little burnout a few times over the last 14 weeks just trying to manage logistics and figure out next steps. Some of this is as simple as navig...

Re: Are we in a vehicle bubble?
I'm not following the auto industry in particular, but it seems that this might just be cyclical with many people having put off buying cars in the wake of the distribution-chain mess that the pandemic left behind. Now that the economy is cranking again and wages in general have gone up, there's roo...

Re: Gaming/virtual economies (EVE online)
There are a lot of very good game now. I have several games with playtime in the 4 digits. They don't help the world, but they keep me in a learning state that would otherwise require to be very invested in a career to be attained. Most job don't realy help the world either, at most, they fix issue...

Apparently Denmark is pretty big on Counterstrike, both in terms of general popularity but also in terms of ranked teams. No idea why.

@zbigi - I played Civ 30+ years ago. I bought Civ5 on a steam sale but didn't really get into it. If you want something different than colonizing or attacking things on hexagons, try AI War. It is technically RTS, but you can pause at any time and issue commands while paused.

Re: Gaming/virtual economies (EVE online)
Wow, 30 hours a week is 4+ hours per day. That's like my work week :D I'm surprised that I manage that much, but the experience actually does feel a bit like how my work weeks tended to go. Bursts of flow state activity followed by rest after the brain gets zonked. Once recharged, another 20--40 mi...

Re: Gaming/virtual economies (EVE online)
I've made it to Tier7-8(*) in World of Warships and I know understand why some people call it World of Wargrind(ing). Game time has increased to some 30 hours per week. In terms of skill I can now mostly hit what I aim at and also get away with it without dying in the first 10 minutes. I usually sco...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
In our modern era, it may very well be that Kegan3 becomes a limiting factor with "freedom-to," as the institutional life pack includes things like social recognition, connection, etc that are difficult to replicate in freedom-to. Either one has the aptitude for solitude or finds a way to...

Re: Notebook of comandante
From what I read, the best estimate for sea level rise is 1mm per year. Over a hundred years that adds up to 10cm, not visible to the human eye. It's faster than that. Currently closer to 3.5mm/year and accelerating (ice melting faster on top of the thermal expansion base rate). However, the vertic...

Anyone interested in building furniture before or during the European ERE meetup? I actually think this is possible! (especially if you have a chopsaw) The hard part would probably to get the furniture home again. My mother and DW built this set of outdoor armchairs (*) over a couple of days (handt...

I am saddened that you do not consider my LentilBaby concept to be a creative contribution to the forum. I am surprised that you do not, for example, consider basuragomi's experiments with LenTofu to be a creative contribution to the forum. Making tofu out of lentils or being a live-in-girlfriend m...
