Re: ERE Cooking for beginners
The ERE book talks about a strategy to reduce cooking cost. The basic principle is to go from ingredients to recipe as opposed to buying ingredients for a recipe. Try to buy mainly unprocessed foods, and buy staples such as rice, beans, lentils, and pasta in bulk. If you cannot live without meat, t...

Catch 22 with Bond Funds
I'm looking for some thoughts on this.... We all know that owning TLT or EDV right now is probably a losing proposition with interest rates going up and the price of EDV/TLT going down in the future years. So a lot of people say it's stupid to buy into long term bonds right now...And they don't feel...

one could say VTSAX already gives you exposure to Emerging because of the global nature of large corporations. I would simplify the portfolio more.

Re: 3 Part PP - Where are the Bands?
To clarify; I'm not against cash, and I'm not smack-talking Harry Browne. I just think that so much uninvested capital is wasted opportunity. No worries! I'm admittedly a cash fan. Just a small nitpick -- in the PP, cash is not uninvested money under the mattress. It's an investment in go...

Re: 3 Part PP - Where are the Bands?
Just because a 3 part has better performance historically and I don't need the cash in that part of my overall portfolio.vexed87 wrote:T9000 beat me to it! I was thinking along the same lines.

Tyler9000 wrote:When the PP holds 25% of an asset and sets the bands at 15 and 35, that represents a 40% rise or fall of that asset (35/25=1.4). Using the same 40% rule with a 33% allocation would put the bands right around 20 and 45.
thanks!
My math is showing 20 and 46....

3 Part PP - Where are the Bands?
Need some opinions here.... Instead of a 4 part Permanent Portfolio, I operate a 3 part PP with part of my investments. 1/3 bonds, 1/3 stocks, 1/3 gold In the classic 4 part PP, they say to rebalance once a part of the portfolio breaks either 15% or 35% of the total portfolio. Where would you make t...

Re: Anyone moved to a different state for cheaper housing?
@Allagash, I also love Maine. I live in Boston and I'm currently looking to buy in Maine. I like North Berwick area or Wells. I don't want to be too far from Portsmouth, NH and Boston so I'd like to stay in the southern half of Maine. I go up there at least every other weekend from Boston. I've been...

Re: 2.00 a Day
I have. It was a very sobering look at poverty in America and what people do to get by. One of the things they talk about is how little cash people who receive benefits have, and that basically, you can't live without cash in one form or another, and what people do in order to get cash to do things...

Re: Intelligently Financing a Child
I'm glad to see people with kids say those figures are way too much.
Yes, one of us could stay home with the kid.
So I guess the only other major possible expense is school. Kid would go under my health insurance.

@Dragline,
thanks for the info....If the money put away in the 529 is not needed for education down the line, do you know if there is a penalty for cashing it out and using it however we wish?

Intelligently Financing a Child
Looking for feedback from my ERE Peeps..... We can use this article as a "rough" guideline... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/18/cost-of-raising-a-child_n_5688179.html It says it costs about 250k to raise a child until that child is 18. I'm going to say it's about 1400.00 per month f...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius
Scott Adams has been arguing that Trump has been using his skills at persuasion (Trump did write a book on it) as well as NLP to set up anchors & mental associations to his benefit or to disarm media traps, and that this happens to explain why he's been dominating the polls. I'm not american, b...

How to Invest 100k in Real Estate?
I want to invest 100k in real estate. I save 4k per month, which goes into a savings account or stocks/bonds. I'm asking for possibilities regarding real estate. What is the best long term investment in real estate if you had to invest 100k? Would you buy a small condo and pay it off in cash? Find a...
