Re: On-the-go Meal Prep Kit for maximizing grocery stores as an alternative to fastfood/restaurants?
We eat twice a day. This morning we went for a run and then came back to the hostel/hotel and made a breakfast of fruit, oats, nuts, seeds and nutmilk. This afternoon we splurged on a readymade salad from Pingo Doce (€2.89) with some fake chicken (€3.79), leftover bread (€.60), leftover hummus (€.60...

Re: What do you do for work?
Lately, I have used this question as an opportunity to evangelize. "We have always been EXTREMELY frugal and were able to save most of our earnings from regular corporate gigs. Then, way back in 2000, we quit those jobs. Since then we have been doing thing we find interesting. Lately I've been ...

@theanimal, YES!!! Four and a half years seemed twice as hard as our normal three year. I am not sure why. We certainly had more stuff to sell, but we did phenomenally well with that. I created an "Estate Sale" on Facebook Marketplace where I listed the price of the paintings and furniture...

Most of our possessions have been sold. Mrs. Ego's scooter has been sold despite three friends offering to store it for us. The photos below show our storage unit. This time we needed a 5' X 10' unit. We decided to save the Honda Fit and three bikes. https://i.imgur.com/fCASQjN.gif Jobs resigned. Ju...

Well, this quote alone is spectacular. Jacob Lund Fisker, a Danish former astrophysicist who is often thought of as the father of the FIRE movement, told me. “However, it is not easy, because everything the typical middle-class consumer has been raised and trained to believe goes against these princ...

What a wonderful post! You did such a great job of capturing one of the most important elements of couples travel. During lunch today, we were talking about how fortunate we are to be taking this trip now, rather than in our 60's. We are seeing the country at a unique point in time, and are healthy ...

Re: Ego's Journal
I think one element may be that the US consumer is cash poor these days. Agreed. I believe the messaging does not match the reality, but I would have thought that a bike swap meet would have been the place to boom during a downturn. I guess not. This is something very specific to the bike industry ...

Re: Ego's Journal
I sold at the Velodrome bicycle swap meet last weekend. It is the largest bike swap in California. While I did quite well selling all of my mismatched bits and pieces to buyers from Mexico who cross specifically for this event, I was surprised that the number of buyers remains at about 50% of pre-co...

Yes, perpetual stews were the norm in many places since medieval times.

Might be a good feature of a multi-day ere meetup. Seems to be getting quite popular today.

@AnalyticalEngine, you say that as fact, but I know two autistic young men who have experienced incredible improvements when they worked specifically on theory-of-mind strengthening techniques, so we could argue the degree to which these are fixed. Many years ago when I coached basketball I used a s...

@Scott2, yes, my average over the past 4 week was 67 minutes per day, though the past week skewed the average lower as we have been busy and I ran only three days. That said, my mother was an avid runner as well. Her cholesterol was very high despite her walk-running until the day she died.

A crude metaphor would be how tall one is. The average male US height is 5'10" or thereabouts. If you're 6'2", you're taller than average, but your height is not your defining characteristic. OTOH, if you're 7'5".... Similarly "tall" cognitive functions is the same way exce...

So I'm at a loss. I'm very leery of statins but I'm more leery of heart disease, lol. Even though it appears I'm doing a pretty (but not off the charts great) job at managing blood sugar/insulin in an instantaneous sense, ir seems likely I still have something fairly serious going on under the hood...

As such, if MBTI was actually taught en-masse in the public school system, about 9% would "finally get it" whereas the other 91% would be complaining about "why we have to learn this crap theory that clearly doesn't apply to myself or anyone I know". Results of an MBTI test are ...

@Sclass yep, it's pretty cool for what it is. However, Musk's sales pitch back in 2016 or so was for people to pre-pay the extra $10k (or whatever it was) for FSD, because once it lands, their Teslas will be able to work as autonomous taxis 24/7, and will only appreciate in value. Obviously, 8 year...

There is self-knowledge and there is diagnosis. Diagnosis is done by someone else. An expert. When a person is diagnosed, they carry that diagnosis around with them. The diagnosis itself changes them. This paper (PDF) is about those on the margins of being diagnosed/undiagnosed with a mental illness...

What if people's happiness originates from how well one's approach matches one's actual neurochemistry. IOW, what if you're not really happy being a logistics manager despite being good at it. Then the key would not be to find something else, like travel, to apply logistics skill too, but to look f...
