Re: Being misunderstood while trying to be ERE/ Finding a partner

...and I certainly wouldn't include my designer purse in my dating profile picture. This. Those photos are about signalling, pure and simple. A small minority of women go through life blissfully unaware of what they're communicating to others in their selfies. Most will take 50+ carefully staged bu...

Re: Can one control one's thoughts?

Unfortunately, it's easy to control and direct my thoughts when I'm not under stress (when doing so is not as necessary). But like willpower, the more I actually need it, the less available it seems to be. The one helpful thing I've learned on this topic is that controlling my thoughts/focus is poss...

Re: What values do you value the most?

Ditto Dragline. #1 is probably whether someone's stated ideals and their actions are in sync... that type of integrity. Or put another way: apart from just straight up evil, hypocrisy is the biggest turnoff. It's like intellectual body odor to me. I don't tolerate it in myself, and I cannot look pas...

Just brainstorming here:

Is it possible to build a greenhouse structure on your lot within which a micro residence could be hidden? (Or would a greenhouse inherently violate some permaculture principle that I'm unaware of?)

Re: "The opposite of poverty is justice"

I don't think it's that simple, BRUTE. There's an incredibly high correlation between certain drugs and crime, specifically property crime. Rich addicted people can feed the beast all they want, but poor addicted people steal to feed it. And since other people tend not to like being stolen from, tho...

Re: ffj's early retirement

Well it's been 3 years since I quit full-time employment and I was kind of evaluating my decision the other day. I can still say with complete honesty that I'm glad I did it. Life is so much more interesting now that I can find the time to explore various things that interest me. And I still don't ...

Re: JL Collins - The Simple Path to Wealth

Tyler is right. Logical decision making is unicorn-rare. Almost nobody makes decisions by starting with research and facts. They "evaluate" (if you can call it that) the given situation in 5 seconds flat, decide what feels best to them based on their own preferences and value systems, call that deci...

Re: Best books on depression?

Yeah, depression is sort of a hobby of mine.... Me too, girl. :( Ditto the Andrew Solomon recommendation. He's the man when it comes to depression. He's had it, he's done PhD-level research all over the world on it, he teaches it, and he writes about it. His TED talks alone are gold. If you really ...

Re: JL Collins - The Simple Path to Wealth

brute found the book (and the stock series) a bit disappointing. it's not that his concepts aren't true, but they are so confidently presented as The Only Way (tm) that they almost reach a Tim Ferriss-level of eye rolling. This was G's take also. I believe the word he used was "pompous." The tone r...

Re: Dealing with the death of close people?

If the person is truly close, you won't be remembering positive influences for quite some time. You'll be remembering how to breathe. I lost a daughter. My life did go back to normal after about three years. I still cry on her birthday, and at baby showers, and whenever I hear of someone else losing...

Would you like us to list our microfailures? I have plenty of those. We're still on our ER path in spite of them, though, so not sure how instructive they'll be if your goal is big picture failure. Also: isn't giving up the only real failure? Edison's light bulb and all that? https://www.brainyquote...

Re: Dealing with casual insults from family

People I thought were very close to me began to distance themselves. Of course they knew what I was doing all along, they just couldn't accept it gracefully. It has been lonely but I still prefer to be on my own after the shallowness of my friendships was revealed. I am deeply afraid of this happen...

Nice pics! We just traveled from Custer, SD to Spearfish, then westward to Buffalo, WY, and then SW to Shoshoni > Lander > Farson > Rock Springs on a tent camping expedition. It is the prettiest drive I've ever taken, bar none. Every time we topped a hill or went around a bend there was another brea...

Re: Where do "Rights" come from?

I agree that rights are a moral construct, and further posit that "rights" (receiving from individuals/society) is only half of the real discussion in these two threads... "responsibilities" (giving to individuals/society) is the other half. And there are some incredible machinations going on to avo...

I also like the current theme. +1 that it is perfectly adequate on a mobile browser.

The only difference I'd personally prefer is the ability to access this forum through Tapatalk. The only reason that is appealing is that app notifications could then be used.

Re: Do I really need 8 GB of RAM instead of 4?

I tend to watch movies HD, have at max 10 tabs open, use Microsoft Office, play flash games, and use Skype and Google Hangouts often. With the exception of Skype, I do every bit of that on a T100 with 2 GB of RAM. Running Windows 10, no problems whatsoever. I would think therefore that 4 GB would b...

So, I guess our country will suffer because of the human brick these folks just threw at our U.S. of A. They want, what, special sympathy? Just sympathy, really. Which apparently they don't deserve because... why, exactly? Because they're white? Because their pain is partly their own fault? Because...

Right. It couldn't possibly be that someone who obsesses over words for a living thought maybe she could express herself better in another way or at a different time.

I'm tired of the shaming BS. (Here, of all places!) Look, you want to discuss the merits, or lack thereof, of a specific position? By all means, let's have a reasoned discourse. You want to shift the focus from the points to the person making them? No. Do not infect what is quite possibly the last g...
