Re: An investment framework

Your theory sounds similar to the ones behind the "Permanent Portfolio". Are you familiar with that concept? Your item 2) is also similar to Kahneman's observation that "Regression to the mean" is probably the best strategy long term. In practice, this is also known as "rebalancing." But I would jus...

Probably Kindness (or maybe Humor) if I had to pick one. I favor the ones that are relational and that you can fulfill most every day over the ones that are situational (e.g., bravery). More bang for your buck. ;-)

Re: Tips for driving on the highway with a cargo van?

What, no trailer? I drove across the country in a '62 Ford Falcon towing a home-made wood box on a tiny skeleton trailer when I was your age. It was a grand adventure. Put the heavy stuff towards the middle/front to avoid fish-tailing. Driving on highways is easy. Just don't drive in the left lane u...

Re: "What the Health"

Well, our tiny epidemiological study seems to indicate that whether you are a carnivore, omnivore or herbivore, healthy cholesterol metrics can be achieved by all. Meaning the meat factor doesn't really matter and other factors are at issue. In this group, I would suspect the lack of processed foods...

Re: "What the Health"

Triglycerides 0.62, HDL 1.33. Maybe having meat with one or two meals per week on average? 2-3 eggs a day though. Minimal dairy. The rest mostly vegetables, legumes, some whole grains. Exercise 4-5 days a week. Yes, some of these look like the Canada/UK/Australia version (mmol/l). There is a conver...

@sl-owl-orris: triglyceride/HDL ratio show off?
Inquiring minds wish to know.

I'll volunteer mine, too. ~2.3  I need a higher HDL level.
1.63 for me last year. A few years ago < 1, but I've been slipping. Need more sardines, maybe.

Re: "What the Health"

WHO/IARC now readily backtrack and waffle on their "conclusions", which are routinely mis-cited by the public. In fact, they admit that that their studies as to non-processed red meat is not causal, but merely associative -- meaning that other life factors could be at play. As for the central issue...

Re: Actual ways in which a large Index Fund / ETF could "blow up"

Things that are negatively correlated with stocks would make money in the index fund crash environment -- like long-term treasury bonds. Panic assets like gold would probably also do pretty well. Even the dollar itself. You are correct that so-called diversification among positively correlated asset...

Re: "What the Health"

For most, the only way they will ever change is through sickness and pain, even then most will not change. My dad’s mantra was to tell us how healthy our wild game (meat) diet was growing up, every day before dinner he would recite what he was taught from the news and school, i.e. meat is good for ...

Well, I built one of those, but it was just made out of wood and metal fasteners on top of a foundation of cinderblocks. I don't know anything about burning skyscrapers. Pretty much everything burns if its hot enough and there is oxygen. Or it melts.

Re: Should I go to a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat? Or finish prepping for my move/new job?

It's from Daniel Kahneman's book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow". Its a model to describe the human mind works, with System 1 (Fast) being governed by heuristics or rules of thumb that are cognitively easy to fall back on or fall into and System 2 (Slow) being the part that actually analyzes a problem in...

Re: Should I go to a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat? Or finish prepping for my move/new job?

Sounds like another false dilemma. Why can't you go on a three, five or seven day retreat and use the other days to take care of what you need? Or recognize that there is no reason you need to do all those tasks before starting your job? But I seriously question why you have not sold some of that st...

Well, there's more than one way to skin this cat. And a lot more ways to end up with cat fur in your mouth. This one is as good as any if you can stomach the downturns. @Fish -- yes, switching horses midstream is a way to choke on cat fur. Pick something you can stomach and hold on to your stomach.

I listened to the podcast, too. Ritzholtz has also had guests on that have said this is not a problem, given the overall makeup of the market with institutional investors dominating and index funds still comprising only 1/3 of the market. I honestly don't know if its a problem. It could certainly be...

Go visit the hospitals and see what people are eating there, find someone over the age of 40 who is thin (like a teenager) and looks healthy (if you can find one) and ask them about diet. We can do our own research, there is no need to rely on others. So are you saying I can eat potato chips, frenc...

Yeah, I think I would move around - isn't that the point? Maybe something in Croatia and something in Spain to own.
