Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

@halfmoon Thanks for sharing. I have siblings like your son and I always half expected at least one of my children to have similar issues. Been lucky so far on that front. And it is very tricky trying to determine when helping will be helping and when it will just be enabling. There is only so much ...

Re: Who'd a thunk it? Obamacare not repealed

Well, the die was cast when the GOP leaders proposed what was essentially Obama-care light. If your problem with Obamacare is government involvement with healthcare, then the whole thing made no sense from the beginning. This is what the Freedom Caucus ran on and got elected on, and so it was not su...

A little OT, but here is an interesting paper from Bridgewater (Ray Dalio) about populist movements in various countries in the 20th Century that includes all of your favorite boogeyman leaders: https://www.bridgewater.com/resources/bwam032217.pdf

It just came out this week.

Re: Role of High Yield Bonds in a Portfolio

I agree with GTOO. The reason to own treasuries is their negative correlation with the stock market, especially when stocks are at their worst. Many other bonds do not behave the same way, especially junk corporate. But the interest rate on LT treasuries is not high now (and won't be), so you would ...

brute thinks that humans in power readily abuse the ignorant humans' casual or overt xenophobia for their own purposes. for example, inciting black-hate and mexican-hate helped make marijuana and other drugs illegal, because "mexicans and blacks high on marijuana" were "raping white ...

Re: ERE kids?

Well, the question is probably too broad -- you will find different answers for different parents and children. But I think probably some of the best principles are (1) spend as much time as you can with them, especially before they become teenagers -- after that, quality time definitely trumps quan...

Nowadays, I don't see that dynamic being as obvious. It seems like the believers think themselves to be smarter than the general population. So now, they think the general population is unintelligent, uninformed, and brainwashed into believing the earth is round or that trails left behind airplanes ...

If the salaries are the same, the short-term economics says Rochester. But you also have to consider the overall game plan for the next 5-10 years. The Frugalwoods hacked Boston for a number of years before retiring to their homestead in Vermont. I would go read the early parts of their blog to see ...

Re: Alternative History

I don't get the whole "story" of history anyway. Stuff happened. We make up stories to try to explain it, but we can't know if they are right. Didn't Taleb talk about this in the Black Swan book? He does a bit, but you will find more of this in "Ubiquity" by Mark Buchanan and &q...

No, you don't get it. If you own a house and live in it, you have to pay taxes on it and upkeep to maintain it. It's an expense, not an asset. A job at Walmart might not be enough to pay for it, depending on the house. Again, unless you have a lot of other assets or income, owning a house just to l...

North American Natives practiced more agriculture prior to the arrival of the Europeans, and the decimation of their population by disease brought by the first arrivals, led to the false notion that they were primarily hunter-gatherers. The book "1491" has a lot more on this topic and is ...

what's Dragline's 500m pace on the rower? About 2:16 at the moment for the 2K, which is pretty laughable. Of course it was much worse about a month ago when I tried a real 2k for the first time and bonked after the first 800m, and I am taking seconds off every week. I would need to get it down to a...

+1 to what BRUTE said. If you have space for it in your home, you can get weightlifing equipment for pretty cheap (and sell it later for the same price). For my basement I had a power rack, barbell, bench, and abotu 300lbs of weights. Got it all for $300 I think and sold it for $300 (or even more b...

We've committed to supporting them through one degree. But it has to be a STEM or some other valued credential, which they are welcome to pitch to us. First two are already locked into engineering schools, so there's only one wild-card left. (I really need one of these kids to go into finance, actua...

The opinions of famous people outside their fields are often worthless or just no better than that of a random person. People erroneously equate fame, which is the twin false god of happiness with consumerism, with "worth listening to," and personal fame often induces Dunning-Kruger or &qu...

Passion and meaning emerges from the development of skills and competencies. It's very good advice for most people and &q...

Yes, welcome back. I don't know if you qualify for 457 plans at your school district, but I recent ran across these people on the choose FI podcast and they seemed to have found a magic way to game the 457/403b systems using some special features of the 457 plans that allow for early withdrawal and ...
