Re: Just Fired - What should my next move be?

I've canned about 100 people in my career. Some were just in the wrong place, wrong time, others were just in the wrong jobs. Which are you? Let go right after tax season, could be timing. But when I was making personnel decisions, it was always with the goal of long term team development. Even when...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

So, you play on portfolio charts. Why not just model the portfolio you want, without the gold to see the results?

Re: On dealing with rumors?

Don't. It is that simple. Don't deal with rumors, or the vapid people who live by them. Life is full of real challenges, there is no reason to waste your life on chasing shadows, or rumors. Also, as with pranks, reacting attracts more of the same. You are here. This is because your values don't alig...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

If someone, regardless of party affiliation, is NOT bothered by the fact that the Russian government likely influenced the results of the election then there is something wrong with that person. If someone is NOT bothered by the fact that the Russians continue to meddle (Calexit for instance) then ...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

I can't believe anyone is still talking about this. Russian influence in American politics is nothing new. Look at the changes in our prints' portrayal of Hitler when Stalin and he were carving up Eastern Europe, vs the portrayal after Germany attacked Russia. Do you think the radicals of the 60-70s...

Re: Should we adjust the SWR based on last All Time High?

Well, my point is to use the same withrawal amount as on market highs. If you have 100k on a market high, the withdrawal amount is 3k. Then the amount you safely can take out should still be 3k when the market is 50% down and you have 50k remaining. This means that you at this point can use 6% of y...

Re: Halfmoon's journal

My first place after moving out, as a teen, was a one room cabin, with an outhouse, and an outdoor shower. The run thru December rain getting back inside is another of those *fond* memories I described earlier. My girlfriend at the time was less enthusiastic about outdoor showering opportunities, as...

Re: America's breadbasket

And if you look at the farming in Missouri, by Google earth, you see farms bounded by woods. If you look across the river, you see farms, bounded by farms. If a map of corn production by county didn't reflect that, I'd be suspicious. But now I'm curious about productivity per acre. The woods will cu...

Re: Should we adjust the SWR based on last All Time High?

Wait, so the OPs goal was to DOUBLE withdrawal during market lows? For... Safety? If I HAD to withdraw in 2009, I would be looking to sell whatever was doing least badly, and making a series of smaller withdrawals, rather than a full year's withdrawal. A strategy that would have worked in 2009, but ...

Re: America's breadbasket

Look in Google.maps. the.Missouri side is rougher terrain. The dark green is forests, where the land is too steep for easy farming. This ties back to what I have said elsewhere, that there is further expansion of farmland available, if prices ever justify farming marginal land. Not that I am advocat...

Re: Halfmoon's journal

Zillow rates my property 200k higher through my owner's account than if I log in as guest, and just find my way to my property. Any idea of why this is the case? Is it intentional? Zillow is driven by eyeballs. People are fascinated by home values, and change in home values. It seems like poor mark...

Re: Halfmoon's journal

In snohomish county, septic records are kept by the health Dept. You can pull up asbuilts online, using the parcel number, from the GIS maps. You can also do a public records search online by parcel number and owners names for liens and pending suites. I like IMAP, but King county likes to keep most...

Re: Halfmoon's journal

I have a property linked as owner through Zillow. I am also looking at it through a guest account. Same property, and a $200k difference in zestimate. So it is totally worth 400k, or 600k, or maybe in the middle, or less, or more. Zillow estimates are worth the price paid. I prefer to look in redfin...

where are all the unpopular assets As I said above. Agricultural commodities that just had bumper crops and companies with insane amounts of debt, and losses, and projected dividend cuts. IE, JJG and FTR. In this environment, about the only unpopular assets are extremely risky assets. Now, once you...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

how did it sour you on index funds or I'm not against index funds. I am uncomfortable buying an index at a record high. Specifically it made me look at what happens to portfolios bought at peaks. Averages hardly matter when your portfolio is diving now. So as much as I dislike market timing, and as...

Re: Reloading Ammo

Depends on what you shoot. I have a friend who shoots an original 1871 Martini rifle. You can't get factory ammo for it. Me, I'm too busy, but it is on my retirement projects list. I host a shooting party on my property every few years, and it's good to have reloaders to pass the brass off to. At so...

Re: CPI vs. "Real" Inflation vs. Gold

Good point, and with baby boomers retiring, thus not adding to retirement accounts, that removes some upward pressure on invest prices over the medium term. Of course, gen X is in prime retirement plan purchasing territory, kids out, prime earning years, etc. But there is a big difference in the num...

Re: Living with Careerist

Shall ponder. I was trying to think about whether I would send 95% of other people to go live on some very nice other planets if I had the power. Well, in my case, it is me who is leaving. I live on 10 acres on an island, nobody has to leave for my piece of mind. This just means I don't engage stra...

Once again, I disagree. For instance, rule of thumb for INTJ would generally be to move from mastery into leadership by stretching ability to move fluidly from I to E. I've been a leader, professionally. I found it stressful, and dishonest. Doing leadership well is best described as manipulating emo...

The more I know about people, the better I feel about excluding most of them. <5% are worth knowing at all.

Most people should be more selective in choosing mates, but when patterns emerge, they should at least consider acting on that.

So... You know what doesn't work. And yet you still don't exclude it. Maybe you should just choose shorter relationships, as a goal. Everyone can be nice for a few weeks/months. Just stop forgiving transgressions. Leave at the first sign of irritability. You have the time, and the opportunity. Don't...

@ this dinosaur, Have you read the books on investment Jacob recommended? The five pillars of investing got me past the index fund faith, if that helps. I still think index funds are good if you don't want to give investment much thought or time. But honestly, if you want passive, above average retu...

If you want my opinion, the saran wrap thing would be more of an impactful, cathartic experience for you. Eh. Sounds like crowd surfing, though I didn't wear syran wrap. That seems like it would be uncomfortable. Seriously, didn't you guys work this vulnerability fetish out in your 20's? I mean, I'...
