Re: the animal's journal
Finally, here's an analysis of 2018 income vs expenses via the ratio created by Fish (I think he's the one who did it..) Writing- .125 Tour Guide- .25 PFD - .1 Forestry- 1.0 Mining 1.0 Total- 2.475 I'm OK with that. 2019 should be similar but I think I'll be able to get it over 3.0 which is much mo...

Re: the animal's journal
I haven't visited the ERE forums in a few years, so I just got to catch up from fall 2016 to today. Really enjoyed it. Sounds like you decided against pursuing grad school. What about the pilot thing? My favorite part of all your posts was the introspection ones, where you talk about what you've lea...

Take Cabin A. Sounds way better, and save the difference in rent in case you need to go rent a hotel for a week or two while they use it, no biggie.

Re: Portfolio Charts
What kinds of asset allocation problems would you like to be able to solve? Since you asked for it ... ;) Here is an easy and specific one to start with: What portfolio of three evenly distributed assets provide the highest overall CAGR since 1972 (regardless of volatility)? A "seek" feat...

Re: Why No ERE Love For Investing in Rental Property?
@ arebelspy, I would like to hear more about your opinions on real estate. Would you consider a longer reply to the SimpleLife's first question about RE and retiring abroad? I'd also like to hear more about your investment real estate strategy. Do you invest mostly for income? WHat types of propert...

Re: Why No ERE Love For Investing in Rental Property?
I don't actually have data on Real Estate volatility but wouldn't one assume it is riskier for people to be leveraging 5:1 (20% down payment) into essentially a one asset strategy? If you're cash flow positive, the paper value doesn't matter so much. When house values fell 60% peak to trough in 200...

Re: Why No ERE Love For Investing in Rental Property?
I have 15 rental properties and am planning to FIRE mostly based on rental income. I plan to live overseas - I don't see real estate as a hindrance to this, but rather a benefit. The speed at which real estate allows one to reach FI can be quite incredible, IMO. With much less sequence of returns r...

Re: SWR milestone record
i'm not sure how people are putting up SWR rates over 6. you pretty much are never retiring if your SWR is greater than 6 and you're expecting to live longer than another 10 years. SWR probably isn't the right word. I would say some (myself included) posted what percent our present expenses are of ...

Re: Derek Sivers | The Meaning of Life in 19 Minutes
Watched video in the OP. Was very disappointed. He had a very shallow understanding of lots of topics and seemed to get them slightly wrong when explaining them. That's more minor though, my big issue with it was he very much conflated two questions. What is the meaning of life? What is life? He sta...

Here is the article that led me to the exercise. http://www.philosophersmail.com/virtues/what-to-do-about-the-envy-were-all-quietly-dying-from-inside/ Just got around to reading this a few hours later (had added it to my read later list), and it argues basically the exact opposite of my post above:...

Re: LASIK
I got a form of LASIK called FEMTO two years ago. Basically a LASIK for worse sight, a bit more expensive and healing happened quicker compared to my friends who got basic version. My sight was really bad (-9,75 diopters, which meant I mostly saw blobs of different color instead of forms) Thanks fo...

Re: Using Envy
I don't think I am envious of anyone or anything, and I think I figured out the reason why. IMO, one is envious of things they think or know they can't have (for whatever reason). Since I know I can have / do anything, I have nothing to be envious of. Anything I want, I get. What need then is there ...

Re: Despite current interest rates, my portfolio isn't shrin
I just think of inflation as a "wealth tax" without the need to file it or make payments, they just take it right out of the value of your holdings for you! Indeed. And it's even more insidious than that, as with a tax you can see that you have less money. With inflation you could have th...

Re: Despite current interest rates, my portfolio isn't shrin
I keep to a budget, and also add up all my accounts quarterly, and the portfolio hasn't shrunk. It just plain old hasn't. Arebelspy is suggesting that inflation has devalued your portfolio if the total dollar amount has remained the same. This. If it hasn't grown, then it's shrinking in real dollar...

Re: Despite current interest rates, my portfolio isn't shrin
Not to be too negative, but you may want to start questioning some things. The market has gone crazy up over the last few years - if yours is just remaining stable, you might not want to consider that a good thing. Further, if your portfolio is staying stable, that means it has shrunk in real terms,...

I also looked up my cable package to see how high I could get it if I included all premium packages including sports "tickets" and I couldn't get close to $350. So (you know me :D ) I called Verizon, gave a BS story about someone I know paying $350, and asked how it could be that high. Sh...

Re: Why are ERE'rs so concerned with a side income when reti
One other reason why a side income may be desirable (or at least the potential for one) is that it lets you FIRE way earlier - crucial for someone who doesn't care for their job. Say you wanted to work until you were at an ultra safe 2% SWR. To do that means your stache has to be DOUBLE what it woul...

Yeah, we're all assuming that's "300k" net worth, plus his business that pulls in 100k and doesn't require much work. That's probably what you're missing, that invisible letter.Ricky wrote:No one sees the disconnect between $300 USD net worth and 100k income? Am I missing something?

Re: Early Retirement Super Extreme
Just read the whole thread. I feel for you, SW. Sounds like you're doing the smart thing trying to stick it out for a bit. You really should look into refinancing and see what a 30-year mortgage would do for you - you don't have to pull the trigger on it, but see how that would change your situation...
