Re: Can one control one's thoughts?

@ThisDinosaur -- Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant a discussion of specific black swan fears might warrant its own thread.

Re: Can one control one's thoughts?

Black swans like what specifically? If you're more specific about what you're afraid of, it's easier to figure out how to hedge.

Maybe this is a topic for another thread.

Re: Can one control one's thoughts?

Yes, of course you can. If people couldn't learn to corral their thoughts there'd be no point in anyone ever going to rehab or CBT. -- Put the wizard in a box. Anytime you have a thought that you know is self-destructive, shove it into a mental box. Allow yourself a set time each week to open the bo...

Re: Steps to detoxify from toxic chemicals?

@Olaz -- I have a book called The Healthy Living Space from when we bought our house and I was trying to strip out all of the hazardous stuff. It's ok (it was a gift). You can have it if you want, just PM me your address.

Re: Being misunderstood while trying to be ERE/ Finding a partner

Haha, fair enough. A wardrobe of designer goodies is definitely a bad sign. :) I'm a BIFL person, so I get mad when people criticize me for spending on something I know I'll have forever. Two people really came down on me when I bought my conversion van, but I've been driving it for 15 years and the...

Re: Being misunderstood while trying to be ERE/ Finding a partner

This is not my field of expertise, but I wanted to make two comments ... -- Don't rule someone out immediately if they own expensive things. I carry a designer handbag, but I've owned it over 20 years. BIFL can often be mistaken for spendy. I'd be just as suspicious of someone who owned only throwaw...

Re: Exercise/Fitness Log

Wow, I'm a little rusty at the yoga thing. And as soon as you tell yourself "don't put your arm down" you can't help but do so. Multiple times. I found a 'chair' yoga thing online for people who are barely mobile but it reminded me of the days when I *was* one of those people so I turned it o...

Re: Garden Log

We have zucchini and tomatoes already. This is the earliest we've ever had them by a couple of weeks. We also have a groundhog who's about to meet his maker. I'm pretty tolerant about sharing the garden bounty with the other residents of our yard, but this one won't quit. He's eating the cucumbers, ...

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

I prefer driving a TT to a 5th because the 5ths are pretty high. Either way, they probably make more sense than a class C (although that's my favorite TBH). I loved our pop-up.

Re: "What the Health"

A lot of the anti-meat sentiment seems to come from people who have an objection to the way most meat is produced. I agree that there are big problems with factory farming, antibiotic use, over-fishing, and the effects of beef production on the environment, but it seems misleading to me to conflate ...

Re: Electric self driving vehicles

I can picture them taking off in states like Florida where there are entire communities of seniors, most of whom probably shouldn't be driving themselves around. Anyone disabled in a way that makes driving physically impossible would also be a potential early adopter. The other appeal I can see is w...

Re: Conspiracy theory you deem most likely to be true

one more time ... As I said, I'm not talking about the twin towers or any fed conspiracy on 9/11. And I only became interested in WTC7 after seeing the owner of the building talk about pulling the building on a PBS special in 2002. First responders said they had been told to evacuate the area becaus...

Why is amazon still considered a tech company? I saw Bezos was at the WH yesterday with Schmidt and Cook and wondered why amazon is lumped in with Alphabet and Apple.

Haha ... I'm like the anti-wolverine.

Got a removable cast today, so that solves the swelling problem. I asked the ortho about modified upper body exercises. He kinda yelled at me and then said I could do any yoga that didn't involve putting pressure on the arm. That's something, I guess.

I'm not home so I don't have access to my list of references, but here's link to the current campaign from the big architects and engineers group determined to get NIST to change their report. They (A & E) have been relentless because, they say, you can't say that steel buildings that catch fire sim...

Re: Conspiracy theory you deem most likely to be true

@Chad -- That doesn't mean they're all bogus. Even Kerry and McCain have let it slip that WTC 7 was pulled. That doesn't mean I think the images of planes flying into WTC 1 & 2 were holograms or that the illuminati planned the attack. It just means that there's another story there that was buried un...

Hard not to think of WTC 7 with Grenfell Tower still standing, although many have admitted it was pulled at this point.

So...I fractured my wrist. (I know, don't say it.) I'm having trouble running because my hand swells while I run and the cast gets really tight. Re: Tips for driving on the highway with a cargo van?

I agree about sticking to highways, and don't feel compelled to do the speed limit. Always assume there is someone in your blind spot on both sides. Don't drive with one hand loosely on the steering wheel like in a car. Leave plenty of room to brake. Be aware of downgrades and ride the brake if nece...
