Re: Where do you fall on this 4-axis political spectrum?

Mine says Centrist, which is pretty funny since I've never been accused of being a moderate on anything. Seemingly contradicting positions must get averaged out in this quiz. I guess it doesn't know how to handle gun-toting environmentalists. https://8values.github.io/results.html?e=52.6&d=48.7&g=53...

Re: The life and times of ... distracted_at_work

@distracted -- You're lucky you can tolerate malt barley that's been processed. I'm a celiac and can't tolerate any of those types of beers including Omission and Daura. I have to stick with sorghum beers like Redbridge and New Grist.

@1taskaday -- You're not the only one with that hobby on the forum. I agree though that people seem hesitant to talk about it. I only mentioned in once when I was complaining about something (not that that's unique either :( ).

Re: You only live once - help

I think it's important to distinguish between 'you only live once' and 'you'll only get this opportunity once'. The first is an excuse to spend money. Unique opportunities, however, should be considered carefully. They are actually mentioned in jacob's description of ERE on the wiki. Part of the rea...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

The worst part of Comey's disclosure was that it turns out the FBI was investigating both presidential candidates in the months leading up to the election.

We deserve everything we get if we let our political parties serve up such flawed candidates.

As others have alluded to, keep in mind that you don't have to beat inflation with every investment.

Re: Investments Trade Log

In my non-trading fund (the bulk of the money), I've been buying short and long term treasuries, and adding to gold. I'm inching closer to a golden butterfly. I'm having trouble convincing myself to buy into the stock part of the allocation right now, although I have bought several REITs. Apparently...

Ha, sorry.

I'm looking at the estimate we got for solar and it doesn't say specifically how far they mount the panels from the roof. I'll add it to my list of questions for the guy.

The tree would have to be far enough away from the house that the growing roots didn't affect the foundation, so there would be plenty of air flow.

Summaries like this seem vague because, well, they're summaries. The book has more detail. I wasn't an automatic convert to their ideas but it's hard to deny that a lot of what he/they predicted is playing out as we speak.

Re: Passive House Design

Selling off the excess from solar isn't always an option. I live in a coal state so it's not promoted and sometimes not available. If I get solar I might try to figure out how to share the excess with neighbors in the summer. I have a good friend next door who faces the wrong way for a good solar se...

If you spray the side of the foil touching the food with non-stick cooking spray, it's easy to clean and reuse it a few times. You can also ball it up and use it instead of steel wool to scour the grill clean. Heavy duty foil works better if you want to use it a few times. Another option is to buy a...
