Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

Hey, we're playing by the new rules, aren't we? Yeah, I'm sure you would've deleted your own post under the old rules.  More likely, my post calling you out on it would be deleted. Right? Nope--I've never deleted one of your posts, even when I've thought it devolves the level of discour...

Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

Thank you, Ego. Very kind of you.

Likewise, this forum has enriched me in more ways than I could ever have expected. I'd hate to see it devolve into a ideological melee.

Re: Bogleheads are mind-boggling sometimes.

Curious, Jacob's earlier comment seemed to imply the Bogleheads are right? Yet, reading some older blog posts it looks like he disagrees quite a bit with index investing. I agree that it's odd. Rebalanced index porfolios outperform active investors over long periods of time, and yet indexing is wid...

Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

Yes, it is the case, whether you believe me or not. So, don't worry--in the future, you can post analogies comparing the internet to police, guns, nuclear weapons, Nazis, and zombies, and it'll all stay.

Re: Hi, European expat in Thailand. Advice/opinions sought

GR--Wonderful, comprehensive post. Thank you. I remember seeing some brand new 1br condos in the Japanese expat area along Sukhumvit selling for $200k-$300k US. It seemed pretty clear something was very very wrong, and foreigners could easily lose a lot of money by getting into the market. I'm glad ...

Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

There have been many, many cases of posts being deleted for being off-topic or going below the level of discourse that moderators feel is appropriate for the board. This has been the case for many months. I know because I have seen many posts get deleted (in the old forum layout, mods could easily s...

Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

Here is the entire text from sshawnn's post yesterday... @secretwealth I have stated in comments before that I believe the central idea that keeps us here is freedom. That freedom can be stated in several different concrete and abstract ways particular to each individual that wishes to pursue it. C...

Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

Introducing politics ALMOST ALWAYS degenerates the discussion! I fully agree--which is why it'd be nice to have some option when this happens, since there are a few forum members who will shift a large number of topics towards their political bugbear. The nuclear option is overly severe, but is the...

Re: Call for moderators (new and old)

S_W, no need to anonymize. Sshawn's post was deleted not because it was off-topic, but because it was a personal insult. It has been forum policy, at least since I was made a moderator a long while ago, that personal insults directed at forum members or non-forum members would be deleted. I have not...

No, sshawn, yours was the only post that was deleted.

And, yeah, the speech was excellent. Thanks to prosaic for the link.

Re: Hi, European expat in Thailand. Advice/opinions sought

Sadly, it's a bit late in the curve for the Thailand housing boom. I wouldn't buy property in Bangkok at these prices--at least not when I looked into it about a year ago.

Re: Unsurprisingly, I found this quite inspirational.

Great question, Felix. I think this statement of yours sums up the paradox this and my other post are targeting: The irony behind all this is that most people do neither. They don't do what they love and they don't build a cash reserve to be free. Instead they are wage slaves hunting empty displays ...

Re: College is the New High School

College is absolutely dumbing things down. Grade inflation has been a hot topic in academia for years. There are, IMO, two sides to this: 1. There's pressure to pass students because they're paying huge sums of money. This pressure is enforced from the top down, and is often very subtle but very muc...

Unsurprisingly, I found this quite inspirational.

I'm sure many here will too: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/201 ... gavin.html

Now let's just see how long it takes for the conversation to turn to libertarians freeing us from the yoke of government.

Re: Mandatory Retirement Accounts?

I interpreted the difference that this mandated account would be individual-controlled that could be invested in private assets (stocks, corporate bonds, etc.), whereas SS can only be invested in U.S. assets (or at least it used to be...?)
