Done the vending machine route. NOT PASSIVE. NOT FUN. People are always messing with your machines...theft, vandalism, it's work. We sold our machines for a fraction of what we paid for them.
I would never go back there again.

Why not a Roth IRA as a second savings plan? You can still get the tax free benefits from any earnings, but withdraw the contributions tax and penalty free at any time you desire.
Given those parameters, it makes for a good emergency fund, too.
