The northernmost library in the world to carry The Book? Only some place north of Anchorage or Oslo could beat this. :-)

I made an acquisition proposal back when the book came out. I just realized they did acquire a copy. W00t!

Another typo, I think, at the bottom of the page before the table of contents: "This book was typest"

Don't obsess about small errors though. They're unavoidable. Too many creators hate looking at their own work, because they only see the imperfections, while the world doesn't even notice them.

I've read until the end of page four (at which time the GF needed me to drive her home) and so far am impressed by the quality of the text.

@Matt - Since a print run costs thousands of dollars, I suspect they fix it in the next edition. I don't think they pulp the current copies. I've found typos in commercial books and I doubt I'm the first one to spot them.

Did you find another one? So far "the the shadows" on page 2 is the only one I've heard about.

Personally I'm making notes of them and when the list becomes too long, I'll republish. So far the list is 1 item long and the typo is not horrendous.

This may be a dumb question, but how do publishers usually handle typos? Make note of them and wait until the current lot of prints runs out before fixing? Fix them on the next edition? Just shrug? I'm not bashing the book for typos, mind you. Just interested in how they're handled.

Don't worry about typos. Nearly everything one reads these days have them, especially magazines and internet articles. For fun try reading the instructions that come with products from China:

Car Dusting Brush

"Make the surface of the car shiny and bright, just like being painted the cerate originally." (?)

"You will not be bother cleaning and painting your beloved car."

"Can be use in dryness as water is not necessary, and fibrous textiles are ok." (?)

"Clean any car without dirt being left."
(?) (Being left where?)

"If you have anything you can contact with us." (Long Distance?)

"Made in China"

At least I can read typos. I wonder who writes the scripts in China? But if you have anything you can contact with them!!!

@Jacob
The answer is not as many as there used to be. Don't beat yourself up about it. The typo doesn't destroy the intelligibility of the concept. Those are the real disasters. I publish educational material for prosecutors. I have two editors and a layout & production artist, all of whom copy edit. Even with this team of professionals, we occasionally go to print with a publication that has some typo in it.

@rePete: As Jacob says, the book is idiosyncratic and borrows from a number of fields. It doesn't hold your hand like broadly targeted personal finance books do--this alone makes it unique in its category; when was the last time you were challenged by a PF book?

I made lots of excited little notes in the manuscript, with the occasional underlined "Profound!" because I think it offers an incredibly powerful and timely message. I think the style (no "forsooth"s, thank God), difficulty level and lack of hand-holding might limit the book's reach, but if just a few concepts from it--

* tight coupling
* re-evaluating middle-class membership
* Renaissance man
* an implied re-evaluation of "opportunity cost"
* running a household like a business

--were to penetrate the mainstream at all, it could be revolutionary. In the most capitalist sense. :)

I don't think I answered your question yet. The target audience is:

* readers of the ERE blog
* personal finance blog/book-readers who have tired of "10 tips to X"
* middle-class who seek a way to "be the change they want to see in the world" and help the environment in ways other than buying carbon offsets and bamboo lounge chairs, with an added benefit of becoming free from a life of full-time work
* middle-class who seek a way to become free from a life of full-time work, with the added benefit of accidentally being the change they want to see in the world
* people who want to retire early, but who don't need an exact prescription of step A, B and C, nor a dubious drop-shipping scheme, to get there
* minimalists who already got down to 100 belongings and are ready to do more meaningful minimization
* all my relatives and friends
* all your relatives and friends
* President Obama
* The tired, huddled middle-class and middle-class aspirants yearning to breathe free?

>It's "The world according to Jacob."

I knew this was all a cult!

Please don't make a simplified Wal-Mart version of the book. Reading something that isn't fifth grade level is refreshing, and this is coming from someone who reads college textbooks almost daily. Everything seems to be in bite-size one size fits all ideologies these days. ERE is EXTREME for a reason - it takes a little more of an open mind to ponder the concepts and then relate it to ones own life. I've had many a "aha!" moment after thinking about the implications of something you wrote. I don't think this should be squandered in favor of a few more readers/book sales. Bring the people to your level, now that's an idea worth pursuing.

... continued.

This also leads to a consideration of whether I should write a simpler book which would be closer to a book version of the 21 day makeover.

Once more people have read the book, I'll start asking questions to figure out if there's an unsatisfied need.

@rePete - Good question. Maybe I should let Zev answer that one. If I understand correctly, he thinks it has more reach than I do.

Generally speaking, the book intersect business operations research/management, personal finance, economics, ecological economics, sociology, and some related personality psychology. It's "The world according to Jacob."

In terms of reading level... like the blog. It's not exactly dumbed down in any way (at least not intentionally).

My thought is that if you understand how the world works, you can control it and get exactly what you want. The book is a long primer on how the world works.
