I recently got excited talking to a recruiter about a job in Lexington, KY. This is only an hour away from one of the best climbing destinations in the country (Red River Gorge). Since then, I've just scheming about living down there and climbing every weekend.

They also have super cheap (<$2 a night) camping at the Gorge, so I could just set up a camp there, live out of the car during the workweek and camp / climb each weekend. Perhaps even come back for some week nights during the summer. Also, was thinking about maybe buying some property near the climbing, living there while renting it out / charging per night for visiting climbers that want a little bit more comfort than just camping.

Glassdoor definitely suffers a bit from the vocal minority problem, as well as the sparse dataset. However, you can often read between the lines of the vocal minority to get a decent picture of the general atmosphere. However, nothing can substitute for interviewing and meeting your potential co-workers face-to-face.

I work in Boston in the financial/equity trading industry.  We do JVM-based development---mostly Java, but increasingly more Scala.  If you want team-based work, I find companies using the Agile methodology often have a better team feel.  Full disclosure: I work for such a company.  (-;

Spider-- that is a great question, but one I don't have an ansewer to. It will be cheap and warm, I've become to accustomed to the ME temps to handle the cold.

@Expat, that's ok newbies are definitely welcome, where do you live when you come back to the US?

@Able, thanks for the tips, I've looked a bit into glassdoor but it always seems to be mostly complaints, and can't tell if that's just the jobs or the vocal minority problem. I don't really have a particular technology that I'm interested in, just want to do some kind of software engineering with a good team, it's the team that I'd be more interested in than the technologies. However, most of my experience (only a year) has been with Java, Python, and Android(more Java). Where/What kind of work do ya do?

Also, if anybody has some suggestions about the job hunt especially how to tell if you'll enjoy working for a company.

For programming jobs, I've found http://jobs.stackoverflow.com to have higher quality listings. Specific technologies or industries often have targeted job boards--anything you're interested in?

To help determine a company's culture, and whether you'd enjoy working there, Check out http://glassdoor.com to see if there are any reviews. Or, used LinkedIn connections to find a friend or friend-of-a-friend who can answer your questions.

PM me if you have any questions about the Boston tech market. I recently changed jobs, and might be able to give you some insights.

Yes, from the US currently in Kuwait. There are some places to climb around here. It is acutally where I did my first outdoor climbing.

I may be one who takes you up on the offer to come climb. I'm still very much a newbie so keep that in mind.

@Expat, Thanks, I've always liked to climb things as a kid but discovered the whole technical climbing thing in college, it's prolly been between 2-3 years since then. I mostly started since there was no gym nearby, but one recently opened nearby that I go to a lot (am writing from there now actually). You should definitely try to get out on the rock more if possible, where are living? Expat from the US?

Also, open invitation to anyone that would ever like to try climbing wherever I end up. I love teaching new people about my addiction!

Welcome spider! Best of luck with your job hunt and your ERE journey. Hope both work out well and looking forward to reading about your updates here.

How long have you been climbing? I got into it about a 1.5 yrs ago. Most of my climbing has been in the gym. Would love to get out on the rock more.

Cheers

@Mac, thanks for the link I'll definitely check some of those jobs out.

@George, that's true, but perhaps I can do better with a software job, but that depends on how much rent would be. Also I really do enjoying writing software and it's something that I would do on my own anyway even if not getting paid. Most of the software jobs also seem to be in the city, and city life is something I've never really experienced and would like to try that out. I think a smaller city that can be escaped more easily would be ideal though, ie Boston over NYC.

Based on your current budget, a job at $8/hr would allow you to save 60% of your gross income. Are you really certain you need to move to the big city to work and get the same benefits?

Congrats! Wish I was just starting out and came upon an ERE blog, you are SO ahead of the game.

Job hunt is tough but guess who is always hiring: http://www.usajobs.gov/

Just ran a search on "software engineer" and there were ~76 postings which may or may not work for your specific experience. Good news is that some govt jobs also provide tuition reimbursement if you graduated with an student debts. (Defer to LiquidSapphire as she stated on her blog that she works for the govt.)

Hello everyone, I've been lurking for a while but have finally decided to start a journal as I'm currently just about to start my journey. I just graduated last Spring and have been living on a pretty small budget but with no income. However, I've recently started looking for work and expect to start somewhere within the next month or so.

Basics
-Looking for work as a software engineer.
-Currently in the Northeast but willing to relocate.
-Primary motivation: More time for rock climbing.
-InTP

Budget
-Car Insurance: $100
-Phone: $20
-Gas: $150
-Climbing Gym: $60
-Food: $150
-Misc: $20

-Total: $500
-Yearly: $6000

Goals
-Get a job that pays well enough that I can save at least 50% of my income, and one that is also close to either a quality climbing gym, or quality outdoor locations. (Currently looking at Boston, New York, Boulder would be awesome if an employer would hire me from so far away)
-Find a cheap housing situation, probably with roommates, would actually prefer that I kind of miss the roommate situation from college.
-Sell or garage my car(at my folks not in town) if I move to NYC

So, this is the plan for now I suppose my biggest issue will be job selection and after that I will probably have a whole new list of goals but for now that is the focus. If anyone has some suggestions for cities that might work well, I would love to hear about them. Also, if anybody has some suggestions about the job hunt, especially how to tell if you'll enjoy working for a company.
